At Cole Art Studio, located in the heart of Edmonds WA, we encourage and inspire our students in their artistic process, no matter their level or preferred style.

We offer over 120 classes and workshops a year in our warm, inviting studio environment. Classes are in every medium from oils, acrylics and pastels to watercolors, encaustics and more. Cole Art Studio is regularly adding new  offerings, so be sure to check back with us often.

Pastel Techniques: Light, Reflections and Composition
w/ Amanda Houston

Dive deeper into pastels with this award-winning artist and instructor! Packed full of good design and composition tips, you’ll learn Amanda’s techniques for creating water reflections and how to capture light in this vibrant medium.  This workshop will be a great mix of theory, technique and experimentation. Amanda will also show you how to use different techniques on different surfaces to achieve great results. Some experience in pastels is necessary.

Renegade Encaustics with a Kiss of Resin
w/ Tracy Felix

Saturday / November 3 / 11-5 pm

Experience two new sensations: the feel of hot melted encaustic wax; the fun of pouring some clear resin over top to create amazing shine. ARTspot owner, Tracy Felix has cooked up a totally unique class you won’t find anywhere else! You’ll get to use a smorgasbord of art supplies, learning how to build up layers of colorful wax and textures, and finish with a resin pour to make it lustrous and shiny. You’ll leave with 2 finished projects to show your friends! All supplies are included in the $50 supply fee!

Lino-cut Printmaking Basics

“Try It!” is a FUN way to try something new! Just 2 ½-hours on a Friday night, and no supply list: come with a friend or make it a date night – or come by yourself and make some new friends! Great for beginners! This Try It! is all about learning how to create a wonderful painting with Encaustic (hot, melted beeswax) and collage. Tracy will bring everything for you to use for collage. Your finished piece will have wax layered over collage, and collage layered over the wax - a work of art you'll be proud of! 

Secrets to Expressive, Loose Painting in Mixed Media

Here’s a fantastic opportunity to learn something new! Would you like to learn how to paint with expression, energy and movement? The Drawing Experience Part 1

Fall in love with drawing - THE basis for all your future art endeavors. Even if you think you can’t draw a stick figure, instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will teach you how! You will develop basic drawing skills using an approach that combines left and right brain abilities. A great new take on our classic Drawing Experience Part 2. If you have some basic drawing skills already, whether it’s from Drawing Experience 1 or some other basic class, you are ready for this one! The “twist” is that he’ll be guiding you in expressive and abstractive techniques, to take your drawing level to a fun, creative, exciting place where you learn to express your own voice!

Combine collage, layers of paint, and textures for a mixed media adventure. You will take home a finished painting filled with your personality. Starting with a simple shape, whether a stylized face or flowers or whatever appeals to you, Tracy will take you step by step to make this easy and fun. This is a great workshop to gain an understanding of acrylic painting, and you will learn about gels, pastes and mediums & what they can do for you!  Great for all levels, “beginners and beyond”.

Crazily Creative Portraits in Mixed Media

Get ready for some fun portrait painting and drawing! With this award-winning portrait artist and instructor, you’ll break out of the mold and learn to spice up your portraiture with your own expression and creativity, using watercolor, acrylics, pastels, charcoals and inks!  After a quick review of how to get the features in the right places, you’ll learn ways to paint out-of-the-box, edgy, funny, emotional, and surreal faces.  This course is open to all who have some experience in portraiture.

The Joy of Drawing: Part 1

A new take on Drawing Basics! Julia will take you on an adventure of discovery – learning how to really “see”, exercising a different part of your brain than you usually use, and teaching you the magical joy of drawing! You’ll learn the basic elements like line, shape, value and form. You’ll learn about simplifying shapes, gauging proportions and how to create depth. This is a great place for beginners to start, and for a refresher course for all artists.

Textural Landscape Painting in Oil from Start to Finish

Learn how to achieve the dramatic effects you’ve seen in Mike’s paintings as we celebrate texture and dimension! In this 3-day workshop, you will learn to use mediums, tools and techniques for creating textural oil painting. Students will execute a landscape painting, learning how to start and how to finish, learning tips and tricks along the way. Some experience in oils is necessary.

Try It! Watercolors!

Majestic Mountain Landscapes in Oil or Acrylic

Here’s a wonderful workshop for all levels of painters – even beginning students! Join us for this fun and easy, step-by-step class, whether you have never painted before or you’re an intermediate student needing to learn some new tips and tricks. With demos and individual guidance, you’ll learn how to paint magnificent mountains, with snowy peaks, and majestic trees reflected in alpine lakes.  If you have wanted to paint our beautiful mountain scenery with oils or acrylics but didn’t know how to start, then this class is for you!

If you love color and patterns and want to learn how to create it in beautiful wax colors, this is the “Try It!” class for you!  Tracy will show you how to paint with hot, pigmented wax, layering color and creating patterns using stencils, and you’ll finish your encaustic painting with alcohol ink to add even more color and shine! Great for all levels.

Mixed Media Encaustics

In this great workshop you'll create two exciting projects as you explore Tracy's new and fun techniques!  As the owner of ARTspot, she has access to a wonderful smorgasbord of art supplies and she brings them all to this full day exploration of what plays well with wax. Oil Painting in The Russian Impressionist Tradition w/ Pam Ingalls

With renowned impressionist Pam Ingalls, learn to oil paint in this beautiful style of “liquid light”.  Going through the basics - exploring value, color value and more - this experienced instructor is able to take you from wherever you are to the next level. All levels are very welcome!

Try It! Encaustics: Designs and Color in Wax

Paintings in natural wax can have such intriguing subtlety. And it’s amazingly simple and fun to create these effects! In this class, you will get to use various tools to create designs (or “mark-making”) in your wax painting, and then add color with oil colors and finish with highlights of sparkly mica powder.
