At Cole Art Studio, located in the heart of Edmonds WA, we encourage and inspire our students in their artistic process, no matter their level or preferred style.

We offer over 150 classes and workshops each year in our warm, inviting studio environment. Classes are in every medium from oils, acrylics and pastels to watercolors, encaustics and more. Cole Art Studio is regularly adding new  offerings, so be sure to check back with us often.

Exploring Pastels

All about Pastels for all levels – beginners included! Great for students who’ve just taken the “Discovery” class as well as experienced pastel students who want to learn Janis’ techniques. In this 5-week course, you’ll cover a range of topics as Janis unravels the mysteries of pastels – surface preparation, composition and design, how to choose colors, and all her tips and tricks to put you on the path to success. With this experienced instructor, beginners in watercolor will be encouraged and have a lot of fun! You’ll learn all about getting the colors and values you want - without making mud!  Through simple exercises and paint along with the instructor demos, we will take the mystery out of this beautiful medium. Individual attention will make this a good class for painters to learn the right amount of water and paint to use to get the desired effects.  Playful experimentation encouraged!

Fall in love with drawing - THE basis for all your future art endeavors. Even if you think you can’t draw a stick figure, instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will teach you how! Painting should be FUN, and an outlet for your creative energy! This five week series is a safe place for you to learn, in a helpful and encouraging environment. Angela will walk you through the elements of creating a series of  paintings, using oil or acrylic, covering five themes: Drawing, Values, Color, Design, and Edges. With demos by Angela and lots of individual attention, each class will go over the basics of one theme for that week and then you'll get to paint an image that highlights that theme.  Paintings in natural wax can have such intriguing subtlety. And it’s amazingly simple and fun to create these effects! In this class, you will get to use various tools to create designs (or “mark-making”) in your wax painting, and then add color with oil colors and finish with highlights of sparkly mica powder.

Mixed Media Encaustics

This is a great workshop to explore Tracy's new and fun techniques! As the owner of ARTspot, she has access to a wonderful smorgasbord of art supplies and she brings them all to this full day exploration of what plays well with wax. You will have lots of time to play, and complete two projects for too much fun!

A Simple Approach to Glowing Cityscapes in Oil or Acrylic

Glowing skies, colorful, wet roads lit up with streetlights and headlights, looming buildings fading off into the atmosphere… these are some of the sights we love in urban artwork. Building on what you learned in “Beginning Watercolor Play”, you’ll delve more into color mixing, values and experimenting with texture. You’ll be painting fall landscapes, clouds and skies, along with fun fall produce as you practice new concepts and techniques with Susan as your guide. You can jump right into this 4-week class, even if you haven’t had any previous experience.

Try It! Fabulous Acrylic Pours

“Try It!” classes are a great place to try something new! In this 2 ½-hour class, students will learn the popular and fascinating new art form of acrylic pours. You’ll learn how to prep your canvas, select colors, do paint layering, and apply paint to the surface, as well as finishing and prep for hanging. And all you need to create this painting will be supplied for just $10! You’ll leave with a beautiful painting of your very own creation!

Try It! Encaustics: Beeswax & Collage

“Try It!” is a FUN way to try something new! Just 2 ½-hours on a Friday night, and no supply list: come with a friend or make it a date night – or come by yourself and make some new friends! Great for beginners! This Try It! is all about learning how to create a wonderful painting with Encaustic (hot, melted beeswax) and collage. Tracy will bring everything for you to use for collage. Your finished piece will have wax layered over collage, and collage layered over the wax - a work of art you'll be proud of! 

Winter Watercolor Cards & Miniatures

Get ready for the season and learn a simple way to create beautiful holiday cards and miniature paintings capturing winter cheer!  Denise will lead her students through a step by step process to paint a range of subjects from birds in the snow to little landscapes with trees and snow, even snow men and holiday decorations. It’s amazing how easy these are to paint!  Denise has been teaching this class for 18 years and it is always a favorite. Each student will leave with two to three hand painted minis ready for printing to give to all your friends!  Perfect for beginners to intermediate students.

Mastering Color: Practical Color Theory for Oil, Acrylic or Gouache

Color! Fabulous – and complicated! Learning about color is KEY to success as a student of art! This weekend workshop will improve every painting you create: you’ll get knowledge and skill you can apply from here on. Learn how to darken and lighten your color mixes (and avoid getting chalky or dull results), how to choose which colors (there are so many tubes!) for which paintings, and much more.
