At Cole Art Studio, located in the heart of Edmonds WA, we encourage and inspire our students in their artistic process, no matter their level or preferred style.
We offer over 100 classes and workshops a year in our warm, inviting studio environment. Classes are in every medium from oils, acrylics and pastels to watercolors, encaustics and more. Cole Art Studio is regularly adding new offerings, so be sure to check back with us often.

Students rave about this course! Beginning Drawing is a great introduction to drawing – right where you need to start if you want the basics. During this 4-week course, you'll be learning, understanding, and practicing with the basic materials, techniques, and concepts that are the foundation of observational drawing.

James starts out with “the basic basics” – an introduction into the amazing world of Watercolor, focusing on materials and basic techniques. This is THE place to start if you are a beginner. Students LOVE this class! Later we will offer "More Watercolor". Take just one or take both!

Calling all watercolor students! Join acclaimed artist Susan Waite and learn the secrets of creating colorful, bright watercolor paintings. You’ll learn how to mix colors to get the tones you want (without making mud) and you’ll get tools you can use in all your watercolor paintings. Then put all your newfound knowledge to work as you paint a simple, beautiful landscape painting. This experienced instructor and artist is well known in the PNW and we’re excited to bring her to Cole students!

“Try It!” is a FUN way to try something new! Just 2 ½-hours on a Friday night, and no supply list: come with a friend or make it a date night – or come by yourself and make some new friends! Great for beginners! This Try It! is all about learning how to create a wonderful painting with Encaustic (hot, melted beeswax) and collage. Tracy will bring everything for you to use for collage. Your finished piece will have wax layered over collage, and collage layered over the wax - a work of art you'll be proud of!

Spend the day exploring color in pastel! Janis will teach you how to use color boldly and fearlessly, focusing on value, hue and intensity. She will also touch upon color relevance and how local color effects color. This is one color class you do not want to miss!

Summer’s flowers are bursting with delightful colors that you love to paint, and we’re bringing back this summertime favorite workshop for you! Join our wonderful finger painting instructor Kimberly Adams and explore sumptuous impressionistic techniques while finger-painting from multiple floral arrangements. Perfect for all levels - even beginners!

Learn more about painting in the medium of your choice – whether in Pastel, Oil or Acrylic. In this 5-week course, Janis will share from her wealth of knowledge in all 3 mediums, covering a range of topics such as composition, design, surface preparation, color choice and mixing. You can bring in your own work and references, and Janis will help you take your skills to the next level. This will be a great class!

With renowned impressionist Pam Ingalls, this class is designed to take each student through the basics of painting portraits with oils, in the Russian Impressionist's tradition. Starting with a demo on Thursday evening and continuing for 3 days, you’ll have 2 models to choose from each day as you build your skills, and feel the joy of your painting coming alive!
We suggest that you have had at least a little experience in drawing heads or faces before this class.

If you’ve had a beginning drawing class and want to learn more on this topic, you can take this class - even if you haven’t taken James’ Beginning Drawing. You’ll learn techniques for measuring accurately and how to transfer that to your drawing. You’ll also learn about perspective, values, and how to create a great composition.

“More Watercolor Painting” is a 4-week course which, together with Beginning Watercolor (formerly called Watercolor Step 1), covers the basics of painting with the wonderful medium of watercolors! Building on the foundations introduced in Beginning WC, this course will continue your learning process, as well as dig much deeper into color. Take these two courses back to back, or if you have already had some basics elsewhere, join in with this class!

Welcome to our “Discovery!” series – just for beginners! If you think you can’t draw, if you’ve ever said ‘I can’t even draw a stick figure’, if you are totally convinced no one could ever teach you to draw… this is the class for you! This is an intro to Plein Air Painting with this award-winning local plein air painter. If you’ve ever wondered how to get started in painting out of doors, this is the one-day workshop for you! You’ll learn how to choose a good scene; what kind of gear to get, how to set up to paint efficiently; how to capture the mood of the setting… and how to make your painting sing! All this and more! You’ll be painting right in Edmonds. Students must have some experience with oil painting.

If the thought of drawing faces terrifies you… If you want to do a portrait of a relative but you aren’t sure how to begin… We have the 1-day workshop for you! Anyone can draw the face and this workshop is designed to give you the knowledge and strategies to do just that. This instructor is new to Cole, but she’s been teaching all over the area for years, for other well-known art class locations. We’re happy she wants to teach with us!

Perfect for all levels of watercolor students, especially those wanting to learn great direct painting technique! Award-winning artist and instructor Ron Stocke will show you the important steps of a watercolor painting from beginning to end. Learn how to start, develop, and successfully finish paintings, achieving strong values and simplified shapes. The 3-day format will allow each student to complete paintings of their own to take home.

Paintings in natural wax can have such intriguing subtlety. And it’s amazingly simple and fun to create these effects! In this class, you will get to use various tools to create designs (or “mark-making”) in your wax painting, and then add color with oil colors and finish with highlights of sparkly mica powder.

Join Mike Wise in his beautiful home studio on Whidbey Island, WA for this very special five-day workshop where you will work both outdoors and in studio. Mike will teach students his wonderful methods and techniques for capturing stunning landscapes outside, then take them into the studio to finish the paintings with the help of photos taken in the field.

This 5-week series will walk you through the basic techniques of oil or acrylic painting, from landscapes and still lifes, to florals and portraits. This two-day workshop is open to ALL levels, including beginners. You will learn how to finger paint a vibrant fall landscape packed with bright yellow, orange and red foliage amongst crisp white aspen trees, building texture and layers with the finger painting technique. Want to learn the secrets to painting dynamic, impressionist landscapes? How to use color and value to create drama, and texture to achieve greater depth? This class is for you! In this 3-day workshop, you’ll learn how to design a strong composition for your landscapes. Some experience in oil is highly recommended.

If you love color and patterns and want to learn how to create it in beautiful wax colors, this is the “Try It!” class for you! Tracy will show you how to paint with hot, pigmented wax, layering color and creating patterns using stencils, and you’ll finish your encaustic painting with alcohol ink to add even more color and shine! Great for all levels.

Experience two new sensations: the feel of hot melted encaustic wax; the fun of pouring some clear resin over top to create amazing shine. ARTspot owner, Tracy Felix has cooked up a totally unique class you won’t find anywhere else! You’ll get to use a smorgasbord of art supplies, learning how to build up layers of colorful wax and textures, and finish with a resin pour to make it lustrous and shiny. You’ll leave with 2 finished projects to show your friends! All supplies are included in the $50 supply fee!
