"Abstract Self Portrait" w/ Tracy Felix

DATE/TIME: Saturday / May 14 / 11am-5pm

COST: $125.00

DESCRIPTION:

We will be working in a contemporary style, so your work will be an abstracted portrait (with guidance!). Tracy will guide you step-by-step, dividing up the space on the canvas with a front view of the face, talking about how the features of the face align as we "rough it in" with loose brushstrokes.

Next we will add collage papers to the areas of the face - this is a great opportunity to add in personal papers like journal pages, maps of places you have been, etc. Tracy has a bin of papers you can pull from as well.

Then spend the day playing with layering techniques using acrylic gels and pastes to create layers of color, texture and meaning. Tracy demos each technique and paints along with you throughout the day.

For beginners to experienced painters wanting to learn techniques in acrylic paints and mediums. This is a fun and supportive class, so you can enjoy a day of painting, combining interesting and fun techniques with the added content of making it about something you love: YOU!

SUPPLY LIST:

You can purchase your quality art supplies at ARTspot! Registered students receive a 10% discount on all their art supplies from the time of paid registration until the last day of class. Most items on this list are available at ARTspot. Palette:
You can simply use a disposable paper palette or a rectangular (Tupperware type) containter to keep your paints from drying out. Tracy uses the Artelier Airtight Peel-Off Palette - it is a sealing palette for acrylics for those who want to keep their paints ready to use for future painting sessions.

Paint:

  • You can bring in acrylic paints you already have, but Tracy highly recommend professional artists paints. Avoid “cheap” student grade paints! If you are just getting started, consider Golden Color Theory Set of 8 colors. This is a perfect set to start with and it is the required set for Color Theory if you are thinking you would like to take that class with Tracy in November. (ARTspot also has sets in fluid and mini tubes. Ask staff to help you choose a few basic colors to start with.)

Canvas

  • 11x14" or 16x20” rectangular - OR - 14x14", 16x16" or 18x18 square format stretched canvas or a canvas panel. If wood speaks to you, try an MDF or cradled board.

Mediums

  • A variety of Gel Mediums and Molding Pastes. For sure bring: regular or heavy gel & a container of molding paste.

Brushes

  • Acrylic Bristol Brushes or synthetics, a variety. Tracy loves flats and filberts: #8, 10 and 12 are great sizes
  • A midsize round brush, for example a #10 round
  • (Bring any brushes you already have.)
  • Flat sided palette knife - we will use this for pushing gels and pastes through stencils

Other

  • Spray bottle for water - especially nice if you have one that mists to keep your paints moist (can repurpose a hair product type spray bottle)
  • Stencils in small to medium size patterns. (ARTspot carries TCW Stencils that are perfect). Tracy will bring some to share as well.
  • Apron or old shirt
  • Collage materials you like, especially anything representative of you: photos, journal pages, sketches or any paper imagery or ephemera you want to incorporate into your painting. Tracy says, “It’s okay to just come and root through my paper stash as well. I will have a selection for you to use.
  • Ephemera (odds and ends) to help personalize your painting... an earring, buttons, anything that you can imagine embedded into your painting.
