Description:
Tracy’s Color Theory + Color Mixing class really helps students with the fundamentals of painting; understanding pigments and knowing how to mix colors to get the desired effect is satisfying and helps students feel successful. Her students know how much fun it is to learn from her – Tracy’s fun methods and her enthusiastic, encouraging coaching makes for a GREAT workshop! Her students have asked to work with Tracy to learn the next step in color theory, and we’ve heard you!

In Part 1, students created a split primary color wheel, and charted colors to learn mass tone and tinting strengths. Other skills learned were how to read the paint tubes, blending with gel and using a palette knife. They also created a hand painted color wheel to have for future reference.

This follow-up workshop is for all students who’ve taken a beginning Color Theory class. If the description in the previous paragraph sounds familiar to you, and you want to learn more, this is the workshop for you. In this Part 2, students will apply their newfound color mixing skills to create a painting! Tracy will take you systematically through the process: blocking in the shapes, laying in the main color areas, and then fine tuning the imagery into a painting. The magic happens when you mix complementary colors (to grey-down the colors) and use them side-by- side (to make them pop!).  She’ll describe how you mix the colors and why.

Everyone will go home with a beautiful floral still life painting!

Palette:
Once you have purchased artist quality paints, you do not want to discard your paints after a painting session. Tracy recommends investing in a palette that will keep your acrylic paints from drying out. You can use a rectangular Tupperware type container with lid or can purchase a sealing palette for acrylics to keep paints from drying out.

Tracy loves, recommends and keeps in stock at ARTspot the Atelier Airtight Peel-Off Palette. It saves your paints from one painting session to the next and the lid is super easy to get off and on.

Brushes:
Acrylic Bristol Brushes, at least two of these type brushes:

  • #8, 10 or 12 flats or filberts (about 1/2" across) will work well for blending your color wheel
  • Flat sided palette knife - super important for this class

Other:

  • Small misting type spray water bottle to keep paints moist on your palette
  • Apron or old shirt
  • One fine or super Sharpie - Black
