Description:
This is a great beginner drawing course! The students raved about this series, and love this instructor. What a great opportunity for you!

If you are looking for a great basic education on drawing, from the ground up, you can take all 8 of these classes (Drawing Labs 1 and 2). Or if you just need to fill in the gaps in your drawing skills, you can just take one or the other of the courses, because each one is geared to be stand-alone. Below is the description in detail and the registration for Drawing Lab 1, and we’ve also included some basic info about Drawing Lab 2.

The general flow for each class will be an introduction and discussion of a given subject, followed by instructor demonstration, followed by student practicing and drawing.

Drawing Lab 1: “Great Basics for Beginning Drawing”

The focus for this 1st series of 4 classes, as the name implies, will be on learning, understanding, and practicing with the basic materials, techniques, and concepts that are the foundation of observational drawing.

Using a minimal and non-intimidating set of tools and materials, the student will learn and practice a variety of pencil holding, sharpening, and mark-making techniques. We’ll be learning critical but sometimes challenging skills of drawing straight lines (horizontal, vertical, and diagonal) as well as curvilinear lines (circles, arcs, ellipses, and combinations thereof). And most importantly the student will develop an overall routine of how to confidently and effectively approach any and every drawing they create, regardless of subject matter. This last skill being critical in alleviating the initial squirming and sweating that can occur when one is about to begin a drawing.

Finally, this first course will also introduce small chunks of more complex techniques and concepts (e.g. measuring/transferring accurate proportions, perspective, 3D structures, composition, and more) that will lay the foundations for Drawing Lab 2.

Drawing Lab 2: “Creating Great Compositions and True Proportions” (check the website for upcoming dates).

Focus will be not only on techniques for making accurate measurements of a given object, but more importantly, techniques for transferring that information to your drawing (the latter techniques often being skimmed over or ignored completely). Additionally, students will learn and understand how to arrange and place all the elements of a given drawing into a cohesive and unified composition - which tends to be much more engaging and compelling for the viewer. (More information is given in the Drawing Lab 2 description.)

When it comes to supplies, I’m a big believer in quality over quantity. I’ve always had better success using relatively few, nicer quality tools (and learning how to use them), than having an overabundance of lower quality items. The latter is likely to create frustrations without knowing why.

The following will get you off to a great start:

Pencils

  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph 4B Pencil (2 of these)
  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph 8B Pencil (1 is fine)

Paper

  • 9"x12” Drawing/Sketching Pad (Canson Universal Sketch preferred, or similar)
  • 9”x12” pad of newsprint paper (e.g. Canson XL or similar)

Erasers

  • Kneaded eraser (James prefers General’s brand - the gray ones)
  • Hard white eraser (Staedler’s ‘Mars Plastic’)

Supports

  • 16"x 20" MDF-board w/ 4 medium sized binder clips (I prefer binder clips over bulldog clips.) Similar boards, e.g. 23” x 26” drawing board with built-in clips are fine as well.

Other

  • Pencil Sharpener (KUM 2-step)
  • Facial tissues (basic no-nonsense is fine. We’ll use for blending.)

Optional

  • Art box for carrying your art supplies
  • Viewcatcher viewfinder

Provided

  • Reference photos and handouts
  • Objects for drawing as well as additional lights
