We have a great 2-part drawing series! Each 4-week course, and each class in the course, is foundational for the one that follow; each will build upon the previous, altogether providing you a great basic education on drawing. But also each course is geared to be stand-alone. Read the following description for more specific information on "Drawing Lab 2: Beyond the Basics".

The general flow for each class will be an introduction and discussion of a given subject, followed by instructor demonstration, followed by student practicing and drawing.

Did you miss Drawing Lab 1? You can still take Drawing Lab 2! If your drawing skills already include what James covered in the 1st course, then you are ready for DL 2. Read through this summary of DL 1 to help you decide:

Drawing Lab 1 - Students learned a variety of pencil holding, sharpening, and mark-making techniques, how to draw straight and curvilinear lines, and how to confidently and effectively approach any and every drawing.  Finally, this first course introduced small chunks of more complex techniques and concepts (e.g. measuring/transferring accurate proportions, perspective, 3D structures, composition, and more) to lay the foundations for Drawing Lab 2 .

Drawing Lab 2: Beyond the Basics

Generally speaking, the focus of Drawing Lab 2 will be on techniques for making accurate measurements of a given object, and also techniques for transferring that information to your drawing (the latter techniques often being skimmed over or ignored completely).

More specifically, Drawing Lab 2 will build on the techniques and concepts learned in Drawing Lab 1 and apply them to not just human-made objects but to the natural world as well. Focus will be on understanding more aspects of linear perspective (diminution, vanishing point, etc) as well as exploring different methods for taking the measure of things and transferring accurate proportions of any subject matter to paper.

We will also study more in depth how to create a variety of values (light tones, mid tones, dark tones) in a drawing and see how lighting and shading play critical roles in the drawing process.

Additionally students will learn how to place all the elements of a given drawing into a cohesive and unified composition - which tends to be much more engaging and compelling for the viewer.

James says, "When it comes to supplies, I’m a big believer in quality over quantity. I’ve always had better success using relatively few, nicer quality tools (and learning how to use them), than having an overabundance of lower quality items. The latter is likely to create frustrations without knowing why.

"The following will get you off to a great start."

Most of the following supplies were also on the supply list for Drawing Lab 1.

  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph 4B graphite pencil (2 of these)
  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black 8B drawing pencil (1 is fine)

  • 9”x 12” pad of newsprint paper (e.g. Canson XL or similar)
