Have you had a beginning drawing course? Want to go deeper? This is a great 4-week class if you want to learn more about drawing.  Some of the topics covered will be:

DL2 Floral Sketch.jpg
  • techniques for measuring accurately,
  • how to transfer those measurements to your drawing so your drawing looks right,
  • perspective and how to draw 3D,
  • values, lighting and shading
  • how to make your composition beautiful and engaging for the viewer.

James has created a great 2-part drawing series: Beginning Drawing and More Drawing. You can take them together, or just take the class that fits your needs, or keep taking the same class until you want to move on. Each 4-week course, and each class in the course, is foundational for the ones that follow; each will build upon the previous, altogether providing you a great basic education on drawing. But each course is geared to be stand-alone, so you can take the one that fills the gaps in your learning.

Each week, you’ll get discussion and demos, and time to practice drawing the subject James is teaching with plenty of individual help, because James keeps his classes small.

More specifically, More Drawing will apply basic techniques and concepts learned in Beginning Drawing and apply them to not just human-made objects but to the natural world as well. Focus will be on understanding more aspects of linear perspective (diminution, vanishing point, etc) as well as exploring different methods for taking the measure of things and transferring accurate proportions of any subject matter to paper. We will also study more in-depth how to create a variety of values (light tones, mid tones, dark tones) in a drawing and see how lighting and shading play critical roles in the drawing process.  Additionally, students will learn how to place all the elements of a given drawing into a cohesive and unified composition - which tends to be much more engaging and compelling for the viewer.

James says, "When it comes to supplies, I’m a big believer in quality over quantity. I’ve always had better success using relatively few, nicer quality tools (and learning how to use them), than having an overabundance of lower quality items. The latter is likely to create frustrations without knowing why. The following items will get you off to a great start."

  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph 4B graphite pencil (2 of these)
  • Staedtler Mars Lumograph Black 8B drawing pencil (1 is fine)

  • 9"x12” Drawing/Sketching Pad (Bee Paper Premium Recycled or similar)
  • 9”x12” pad of newsprint paper

  • Kneaded eraser (2)
  • Hard white eraser (Staedler’s ‘Mars Plastic’)

  • 16x20" MDF-board w/ 4 medium sized binder clips (James prefer regular office binder clips over bulldog clips. Similar boards, e.g. 23x26” drawing board with built in clips is fine as well.)

  • Kleenex tissues

  • Viewcatcher viewfinder
  • Small art bin for carrying your art supplies
