DESCRIPTION:

Do you enjoy oil painting? And would you like to have more knowledge of painting the sea? Then this workshop is what you’ve been looking for.

This 2-day workshop will focus on the ocean with waves, boats and a shoreline. Austin says, “Although I will give a demonstration, I do not intend to take up your time with me painting. I would like you to finish a wonderful seascape worthy of framing.” This class is designed for a range of students – from those who have a little experience painting in oils, to those who are very experienced and want to learn more about how to paint the ocean, shore and more.

We are so fortunate to have this stellar artist at Cole Gallery, and we are excited to present this opportunity to Cole Art Studio students. A little about the artist…

Born in County Tipperary in Ireland, Austin Dwyer is a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists and co-founder of Pacific Rim Institute of Marine Art, and he has been an artist for decades. His art is shown and has been published internationally. He has taught at the Art Institute of Seattle (when it was known as Burnley School for Professional Art), and after living, working and painting all over the world now resides nearby in Mukilteo-by-the-Sea. You can see why we consider ourselves so fortunate!

Canvas:

  • One 12x16 canvas (or more depending on how fast you paint)

NOTE: Please bring toned canvas in a warm orange/terracotta color. “Any warm orangey color will do, just get rid of the white,” says Austin. You can use a sienna or a raw sienna, for example, or mix some of the colors you already have to achieve a warm tone.

  • Cerulean Blue
  • Cobalt Blue
  • Permanent Green or Sap Green
  • Yellow Ochre
  • Naples yellow
  • Cadmium red light
  • Alizarin Crimson
  • Raw Umber
  • Paynes Gray

*If you don’t have these specific colors, don’t worry - Austin can usually work with what you already have.

Oil Mediums:

  • Odorless mineral spirits, such as Gamsol, Galkyd Light, Solvent Free Galkyd or other preferred glazing/drying medium (No Liquin, please)

***Please note: no stinky mediums or solvents will be allowed.

Acrylic Mediums:

  • Retarding fluid

Brushes: I prefer to use inexpensive synthetic long-handled brushes, such as white nylon.

  • Two to three Flat, Bright or Filbert brushes, #2- #6 (#6 will be about ½” wide)
  • One Large Flat or Bright Brush for covering the canvas with color, (about 1 -2” wide)
  • One number 6 round brush
  • *Optional - One liner brush size 6 (eg. ARTspot’s Princeton 4050 reddish-handled brush – not long-handled, but works great)

  • Soft Pencil
  • Two or three canvases between 8x16 and 24x30
