In this three-day workshop, you will learn step by step from block-in to finishing touches, how to create dynamic landscape paintings.  Through demo and discussion, practice and experimentation, along with Mike’s individualized approach to composition, brushwork and color harmony, Mike will share the secrets of how to develop landscape paintings that bring in elements of drama and mood through the use of color and value with exciting skies and atmospheric light effects.

Mike's students continually comment that he is always one of the best instructors they have ever taken classes from. His generous, encouraging, instructive and thorough approach leave each student with newfound skills and confidence from where they launch their art to higher levels. Mike will teach students how to complete their work using an assortment of paint application techniques such as palette knife, towels, brayers, fingers, and brushes for both dynamic and subtle artistic emphasis.  Mike will also demonstrate and teach layering, both wet into wet and wet over dry, as well as more exaggerated techniques for dramatic effects.

Panels or stretched canvas:
3 or more good quality canvas panels* in a fine or medium weave - your choice of sizes in this range: 11x14 to 16x20.
IMPORTANT: Make sure your canvases have a good priming - either buy the Source Tek canvas (which are highly pre-primed) or, if you select a different brand, make sure they have an additional coat of gesso for the priming. (Priming allows the paint to adhere to the surface.)

*Note on Mike's choice of Source Tek canvas panels: these are artist quality linen panels. This superior surface quality is one way that Mike is able to get the results he wants. (We have worked with ARTspot on this, and they have Source Tek canvas panels in a variety of sizes on a special 20% off right now for this workshop. They are panels, so they have minimal depth of 1/8", which makes them more economical than the thicker panels.)

Other:
Easel – standing or table. The studio has a few people can borrow. Call Cole Gallery ahead to reserve. 425.697.2787
Palette - paper palettes are discouraged, as they can be difficult to use, versus a hard, smooth surface such as glass or wood
