Description:
Capture the essence of your surroundings in this day-long workshop using simple, quick techniques and portable materials!  You will be guided in an intuitive approach to sketching with pen, layering watercolor washes, and gathering skills that can be applied to everyday sketching.

 In this one-day workshop we will discuss composition, perspective, and simplifying the subject matter.

 We will begin in the classroom where instructor Lisa Snow Lady will share tips on sketching on-site and lead you through some fun warm-up exercises.  Then, weather permitting, we will “travel” to local areas in beautiful downtown Edmonds to sketch outdoors!

Watercolor sketchbook - an easily portable book with a binding that will lay flat when open. The sketchbook should be able to accept watercolor.
5” x 8” or a similar size in square format. Examples:

  • Pentalic 140 lb. Aqua Journal 5x8 
  • Bee Creative Art Journal - 100% cotton 140lb paper for WC:  8" x 8", 5.5" x 8"

Ink Pen

  • Ultra Fine Point Sharpie pen black, other colors optional
  • May bring in special pens, waterproof and archival - (Sakura Microperm, etc)

Watercolor Brush

  • Round #8-10 (Prinston Art & Brush Co.) with a good point and holds a lot of water.

Watercolors - Options:

  • Pan Paints
    - Not too expensive good quality paint sets.
    - Half pans are okay (Koi brand is a fairly inexpensive brand)
  • Tube Paint Colors:
    - Pthalo Blue
    - Ultramarine Blue
    - Cadmium Red
    - Alizarin Crimson
    - Medium Yellow
    - Black or Neutraltint (Daniel Smith Brand)

Watercolor pan-paint holder, Plastic or metal (if you’ve purchased a watercolor travel set such as Koi, it will come with this)

Misc.

  • Small container for water with secure lid (for painting)
  • Paper Towels
  • Bag to hold supplies
  • Bring 2-3 photos for warm up exercises
  • Personal water bottle (For hydrating)
  • Lightweight folding chair (optional, but you may want it)
  • Hat
