Beginning Watercolor

James starts out with “the basic basics” – an introduction into the amazing world of Watercolor, focusing on materials and basic techniques. This is THE place to start if you are a beginner. Students LOVE this class!  Later we will offer "More Watercolor". Take just one or take both!

Color Workshop for Watercolor Students
w/ Susan Waite

Saturday - Sunday / June 23-24 / 10:30-4:30 pm

Calling all watercolor students! Join acclaimed artist Susan Waite and learn the secrets of creating colorful, bright watercolor paintings. You’ll learn how to mix colors to get the tones you want (without making mud) and you’ll get tools you can use in all your watercolor paintings. Then put all your newfound knowledge to work as you paint a simple, beautiful landscape painting. This experienced instructor and artist is well known in the PNW and we’re excited to bring her to Cole students!

More Watercolor Painting

“More Watercolor Painting” is a 4-week course which, together with Beginning Watercolor (formerly called Watercolor Step 1), covers the basics of painting with the wonderful medium of watercolors!  Building on the foundations introduced in Beginning WC, this course will continue your learning process, as well as dig much deeper into color. Take these two courses back to back, or if you have already had some basics elsewhere, join in with this class!

 


Discovery! A Very Beginning Watercolor Experience

Aren’t watercolor paintings just so beautiful? Have you been wanting to try watercolors, but don’t know where to start? Maybe you’re just a little nervous to be in a class with other students, but you want to see what they’re all about? Here’s the perfect place for you! You can try out watercolors in an encouraging environment that is just for brand new beginners! Join this beloved instructor for a “Discovery!” Joe will guide you through the steps to creating your very own one-of-a-kind piece of art!

The Basics & Beyond in Watercolor

Perfect for all levels of watercolor students, especially those wanting to learn great direct painting technique!  Award-winning artist and instructor Ron Stocke will show you the important steps of a watercolor painting from beginning to end. Learn how to start, develop, and successfully finish paintings, achieving strong values and simplified shapes. The 3-day format will allow each student to complete paintings of their own to take home.

Travel Sketching in Ink and Watercolor
w/ Lisa Snow Lady

Capture the essence of your surroundings in this day-long workshop using simple, quick techniques and portable materials!  With an intuitive approach, you’ll learn to sketch with pen, layering watercolor washes, and gathering skills that can be applied to everyday sketching.  You’ll get tips on composition, perspective and simplifying subject matter.  Capture your summer travels, whether in your backyard or across the ocean, in beautiful simple watercolor sketches!


Sumi-e Art for Beginners
w/ Joe Mac Kechnie

Sunday / August 26 / 10:30-4:30pm

Elegance and harmony, ancient and beautiful, traditional ink wash paintings are a wonderful form of artistic expression!  This will be a great introduction to Sumi technique, design and materials. Also –if you’re already a watercolorist, it’s a great way to improve your watercolor techniques.

Secrets to Expressive, Loose Painting in Mixed Media w/ Joe MacKechnie

Saturday-Sunday / September 29-30 / 10:30 am-4:30 pm

Would you like to learn how to paint with expression, energy and movement? Learn how to create fresh and loose paintings with this wonderful impressionist artist and fantastic instructor. Joe paints in this way and he can teach you how! All medium and experience levels are welcome.

Expressive Portraits in Mixed Media

Get ready for some fun portrait painting! With this award-winning portrait artist and instructor, you’ll break out of the mold and learn to spice up your portraiture with your own expression and creativity, using watercolor and whatever other mediums you choose to use.  After a quick review of how to get the features in the right places, you’ll learn ways to paint out-of-the-box, edgy, funny, emotional, and surreal faces.  This course is open to all who have some experience in portraiture.


Beginning Watercolor

Painting Life with Life

“Life” as in people and animals, and “life” as in energy and excitement. Learn to paint boldly with vivid color! Think outside the box, and paint outside those lines! Designed to help students at every skill level to master techniques, you’ll learn Bev’s tips and tricks, work on design, develop good composition, basic color mixing, and strong values.

Some experience in watercolor is helpful.
