Watercolor Step 1: The Basics

Watercolor Steps 1 and 2 – two separate courses, of four classes each,  covering all the basics of painting with Watercolors!  Watercolor Step 1 will be the “Basic basics” – an introduction into the amazing world of Watercolor, focusing on materials and basic techniques. This is THE place to start if you are a beginner. Later we will offer Watercolor Step 2.  Take just one or take both!

Expressive Watercolor
w/ Joe Mac Kechnie

5 classes / Wednesdays / 10:30-1:30pm
May 9, 16, 23, 30 and June 6

Take your watercolor skills to a new, creative and exciting place! Learn how to express yourself in this wonderful medium. Joe will cover core watercolor topics, while exploring more advanced and creative techniques. You can paint from Joe’s references or bring your own subject matter and he’ll guide and help you find your voice. If you have basic watercolor experience (for example if you’ve taken Joe’s or James’ Watercolor 1 class), then you are ready for this class.

Expressive Portraits in Watercolor, Charcoal and Ink

Get ready for some fun portrait painting! With this award-winning portrait artist and instructor, you’ll break out of the mold and learn to spice up your portraiture with your own expression and creativity, using watercolor and whatever other mediums you choose to use.  After a quick review of how to get the features in the right places, you’ll learn ways to paint out-of-the-box, edgy, funny, emotional, and surreal faces.  This course is open to all who have some experience in portraiture.

Travel Sketching in Ink and Watercolor

Capture the essence of your surroundings in this day-long workshop using simple, quick techniques and portable materials!  With an intuitive approach, you’ll learn to sketch with pen, layering watercolor washes, and gathering skills that can be applied to everyday sketching.  You’ll get tips on composition, perspective and simplifying subject matter.  Capture your summer travels, whether in your backyard or across the ocean, in beautiful simple watercolor sketches!

Painting Life with Life

“Life” as in people and animals, and “life” as in energy and excitement. Learn to paint boldly with vivid color! Think outside the box, and paint outside those lines! Designed to help students at every skill level to master techniques, you’ll learn Bev’s tips and tricks, work on design, develop good composition, basic color mixing, and strong values.

Some experience in watercolor is helpful.

Color Workshop for Watercolor Students

Calling all watercolor students! Join acclaimed artist Susan Waite and learn the secrets of creating colorful, bright watercolor paintings. You’ll learn how to mix colors to get the tones you want (without making mud) and you’ll get tools you can use in all your watercolor paintings. Then put all your newfound knowledge to work as you paint a simple, beautiful landscape painting. This experienced instructor and artist is well known in the PNW and we’re excited to bring her to Cole students!


The Basics & Beyond in Watercolor

Perfect for all levels of watercolor students, especially those wanting to learn great direct painting technique!  Award-winning artist and instructor Ron Stocke will show you the important steps of a watercolor painting from beginning to end. Learn how to start, develop, and successfully finish paintings, achieving strong values and simplified shapes. The 3-day format will allow each student to complete paintings of their own to take home.
