Cloud Painting Workshop in Acrylic or Oil

Description:
In this 2-day workshop you will learn to paint the dramatic cloudscapes that have come to be this artist’s signature. You’ll get to practice and learn a series of techniques to help you capture some of the amazing cloud formations we see in the Pacific Northwest.

Andy will teach you through a series of “paint along” demonstrations on the first day. You’ll watch and practice as he builds the various formations, along with the lighting effects that add so much drama. To this end, Andy suggests that you bring several small canvas boards in addition to your canvases, so that you can practice along with Andy’s demos on Day 1.

Then on Day 2, with Andy's coaching you will paint your own canvas, putting into practice the techniques you learned on Day 1. You will work from references - your own photos and/or Andy’s. You will receive individualized attention and helpful instruction, with gentle suggestions as you create your own painting.

Andy is very familiar with both acrylics and oils, and you are welcome to paint in either one. Note: You can paint in either acrylics or oils.  If you are going to use oils, it will be important to use a drying medium.

Acrylic or Oil paint:

• Titanium White
• Prussian blue
• Cobalt Blue
• Cerulean Blue or Cerulean Blue Hue
• Payne’s Grey
• Cobalt Teal
• Raw umber
• Alizarin Crimson permanent
• Any other colors you may have

Brushes:
Good quality synthetic brushes in "double sizes". (This means they usually have long handles and the sizes are generally twice as big as the short-handled brushes like those used in watercolor.)

• Two medium Flat or Bright brushes, like #6 (these would be from 1/2 - 1" flats or brights).
• Two Large Flat brushes or Filbert brushes for blending the background, about 1 1/2 - 2" or so. (ARTspot has Simply Simmons XL #50 Soft Synthetic for a great price.) 
• Several small round brushes, #4 -#0 (the # 4 is about 1/4" wide). 
• Plus any other brushes you might have.

 Canvases:

• 1-2  18x24-inch canvases. ARTspot has both the 3/4" and 1 1/2" deep profile canvases.

 Other:

• 6-8 canvas panels or other surface, such as boards or canvases, for doing demos (your preference)
• Reference photo, if desired, for the second day (reference will be supplied for the first day and will be available for the second day if you need it)
• Table easel or standing easel (Cole has several of these; call to reserve one)
• For oil painters: Odorless mineral spirits, and alkyd drying medium such as Galkyd Light, Solvent Free Galkyd – no Liquin please. (Note: no stinky mediums are allowed.)
• Palette to mix paints on (could be a paper palette pad, a traditional palette or whatever you prefer)
• Water pot for acrylic painting
• Notebook and pens for note-taking
• Rags or paper towel (Andy likes the blue shop towels!) 
• Bag for trash
• Something to bring your paintings home in
