Cost: $275.00

Registration: Online

Location: This will be an online class which can be seen through Zoom.us. A link to the Zoom meeting, along with instructions on how to use Zoom will be sent in an email before your workshop.

Description:

This is a great opportunity to learn the simple skills and quick techniques to capture the view in front of you and translate it into your sketchbook and painting journal.

Learn how to capture basic shape, color in the shadows and how the light is falling on a subject. You will be shown how to quickly size block in the subject using an easy to understand method. You will learn basic composition, perspective and values.

In this 2-day workshop, you will also learn how to create a small and simple kit to carry with you that fits into a freezer Ziplock bag. You will learn how to render your subject with pen and watercolor washes. Kim will give you skills to create the scene, whether you have 5 minutes or 2 hours to get it down. These skills are also helpful to experienced studio painters wanting to try sketching and painting onsite. In the second day of the workshop, you will build on those skills, gaining confidence in your tools and your abilities. You too can become a great sketchbook/travel journal artist.

Supply List:

Watercolor Sketchbooks – easily portable with a binding that will fall flat when open. Have one of the sizes below:

  • 3.5” x 5.5” approx. (pocket size)

  • 5.5” x 8.5” approx.. or A5 (medium size)

  • 8.25 x 11.75 or A4 (large size) This one is a bit large for our purposes, but if you already have one, it is ok. You can always draw smaller box sizes onto each page.

A note from Kim on the paper – Sketchbook paper should be thick enough to hold a watercolor wash. Try for something that is 100lb or more. 300lb is too heavy for our purpose, but if you already have it, ok to use. Brands that I like are Pentalic Aqua Journal, Stillman and Birn sketchbooks in 150 weight, Moleskin Watercolor journal, and Reflexions Watercolor Journal. Just to name a few.

Ink Pen: permanent waterproof such as Micron Pigma blk size 05, or an ultra-fine line black sharpie works in a pinch

Elegant Writer Calligraphy marker by Speedball – Size 2 or 2.5 Black

Pencil – a regular 2B

Watercolor: Kim uses Daniel Smith Watercolor Sticks and below is her suggested list:

  • Hansa Yellow Medium

  • Quinacridone Coral

  • French Ultramarine Blue

  • Sap Green

  • Quinacridone Burnt Orange

  • Cerulean Blue Chromium

These are the main colors Kim uses for most painting subjects.

If you already have colors you are familiar with, feel free to use those.

You can also use a travel set such as Daniel Smith Half Pan “Sketcher set”, or something from Koi, Winsor Newton or Yarka with Half Pan paints. Just note that if you can get the Daniel Smith Watercolor sticks or half pans, they’re wet with beautiful intensity.

Brushes:

Waterbrush- Kim prefers Niji – mini round or medium size round and the flat . Pentel also makes a waterbrush.

Other:

  • Rag towel or paper towel.

  • If using a regular brush instead of a waterbrush you will need a container for water.

  • A beverage to stay hydrated and maybe your lunch already prepared.

Items listed can be found at Dick Blick or Jerry’s Artarama for online ordering.
