Description:
How can some artists paint artworks that are painterly, expressive, and full of energy and movement? Joe MacKechnie paints and draws this way and has learned some valuable insights into how one can incorporate these elements into their artwork.  Joe has designed a two-day workshop that explores how these elements are created and how you make them a part of your personal style. He will start with abstract block-in strokes and as he progresses, you will see how he makes his subject emerge from what seem to be random marks.  This workshop is open to all mediums and experience levels.  Bring your creative imagination!
With demos, plenty of individual attention and practice time, here are some subjects covered in this 2-day workshop:

Kneaded eraser

Charcoals
Bob’s Soft vine charcoal sticks and bricks (variety of sizes, ¼” and larger.
Note: if you can’t find the Bob’s charcoal in assorted sizes, don’t worry, Joe will be
            bringing extra with him.
Soft compressed black charcoal bricks (made by Alphacolor Char-Kole)
Soft compressed charcoal pencils (Peel and Sketch or Generals charcoal pencils)

Inks
Permanent Inks and Pens:

• Sharpie Extra Fine Point permanent marker

• Higgins Waterproof Black India Ink, 1oz Bottle

Water-Soluble Inks and Pens:

• Speedball Elegant Writer 4-pen Calligraphy Set

• Professional Grade Black Sumi Ink, 2oz

Pastels

• Small set of half-stick “soft” pastels, not more than 20 colors (Sennelier or equivalent)

Acrylics (Optional)

• If you already have some acrylics, bring them with you. If you don’t, Joe will provide them for this workshop.

Watercolors (optional)

• If you aren’t an acrylic painter, ok to use watercolors

Paper and canvas

• Arches Hot press, 140lb watercolor paper, two full sheets (or equivalent)

• Another option to Arches paper is Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Smooth Pad, 19x24, 20 sheets

• Drawing paper: Canson’s XL Sketch/Esqiusse/Croquis pad, medium tooth, 18x24in (or equivalent)

Brushes – A variety of large and small brushes – acrylic and watercolor brushes work great.  I will also be providing a bunch of used brushes for this workshop.

Other

• Stiff drawing board with clips 24x26

• Soft paper towels

• Rags

• Water spray bottle

• Deep water dish (plastic)
