Description:
If you have ever wondered how to get started in sketching outdoors, this is the one-day workshop for you!

An award-winning artist and experienced instructor, Robin will share from his many years of experience of how to use sketching to record the memories of a trip when time doesn’t allow for the setting up to paint. This workshop will focus on the tools, materials, and techniques to successfully render onsite representations of scenes and impressions while traveling light.

You will begin at Cole Gallery on Saturday morning going over supplies and you’ll get Robin’s tips and tricks on how to pack and use them.  Then the class will go into town and venture as far as the waterfront park to sketch scenes of Edmonds. You will watch demos from Robin on how to compose a drawing and simplify the scene. Then he’ll rotate among the students to coach and teach as you compose and complete your own sketches. You’ll go over mark making, shading, value and designing a good sketch.  These sketches can then be used in the studio to create larger finished paintings.

Robin adds, “In 2019 we spent the month of September traveling through France and Italy. I took my full plein air oil painting supplies on this trip and had the opportunity to complete many oil paintings but mostly I used my sketching supplies to record the memories of the trip when time didn’t allow for setting up to paint. I learned a lot about how to sketch “on the fly” and would like to pass on what I learned to you.”

Dress for the weather, as you will be painting in picturesque Edmonds, most likely at the waterfront park. Hats and sunscreen (and maybe an umbrella!) are advised.

A great class for all levels of drawing and painting ability. Sign up and spend a great day in our gorgeous town, trying something new!

Supply List:

Backpack
Rob’s favorite is the Venture Pal backpack. These backpacks are great for traveling! They fold into a small packet and can be packed into your main travel bag to be used on day trips or for sketching supplies.  Find them online for about $20. If you already have a favorite light day pack then bring that but I am sure you will find these very useful when traveling.

Watercolor materials

  • Water brush and water container. Robin’s favorite set-up: a half size ordinary water bottle with a water brush pen that will fit in it. Most water brush pens are small enough to fit in a half size water bottle.

  • Small travel watercolor set (any water media you personally like can be used such as Gouache or Casein as long as it is in a foldable kit)*

  • A small size detail, watercolor brush*

  • Paper towels a handful of paper towels*

*Tip from Rob: pack the watercolor set, the brush and folded up paper towels in a ziploc bag.

Sketching materials

  • Pencil: Robin’s tip: bring a Carpenters pencil (also handy to have a small razor knife to sharpen these). I packed one in my checked bag and it came in really useful for a lot of things!) You can also use a small sand paper board to give them a wide shading edge.

  • Finito pen, black

  • Sketch book that will be hardy enough to accept water media.

  • A post card to mark out boarders in your sketchbook.

  • Another great tool for artists is a QuicKomp for composing and designing sketches. This tool can also be used to rule boarders in your sketchbook. Get them from Dick Blick for about $10
