"Acrylic Reveal" w/ Tracy Felix

DATE/TIME: Sat-Sun / July 23-24 / 11am-5pm

COST: $225

DESCRIPTION:

One of the true joys of painting with acrylics is the ability to add layer upon layer to create a feeling of depth. Tracy will teach you all the latest methods to achieve the effect you are hoping for. During the first day of this two-day workshop, you will complete a midsize painting using a variety of techniques taught step-by-step by Tracy. You’ll use paint, gels and mediums, along with collage to create layers and textures. A big part of this workshop is gaining experience with acrylic gels and mediums, and learning when to use them for the effect you desire. Tracy demos every step along the way! Specific techniques you will practice are: pushing gels and pastes through stencils to create dynamic textures, and blending colors right on the painting's surface. Tracy will also discuss composition and the importance of building contrast into your work.

On the second day, your painting will be dry enough to literally excavate the layers to reveal what is underneath! The final touch will be to add a layer of glaze onto the surface to enhance the color and luminosity of the paintings.

Tracy's classes are extremely supportive of the creative process. The goal is to give yourself permission to always try new ideas and nurture your desire to keep on painting.

Paint:

You can bring in acrylic paints you already have, but Tracy highly recommend professional artists paints. Avoid “cheap” student grade paints! If you are just getting started, consider Golden Color Theory Set of 8 colors. This is a perfect set to start with and it is the required set for Color Theory if you are thinking you would like to take that class with Tracy in November. (ARTspot also has sets in fluid and mini tubes. Ask staff to help you choose a few basic colors to start with.)

Supports: One or Two rigid surface supports (not canvas):

  • 16x20” rectangular OR18x18' square format cradled wood panel (anything in this size range is fine). These birch panels have sides that come in 3/4" or 1 1/2" depth. Either looks great without any framing needed.
  • Concentrate on one painting or bring two boards and either make a pair or try more techniques on them during the workshop.

Mediums:

A variety of Gel Mediums and Molding Pastes.

  • Regular or heavy gel
  • Molding paste
  • Golden Glazing Medium (any size)

Palette:

You can simply use a disposable paper palette or a rectangular (Tupperware type) container to keep your paints from drying out. Tracy uses the Atelier Airtight Peel-Off Palette - it is a sealing palette for acrylics for those who want to keep their paints ready to use for future painting sessions.

Brushes:

  • Acrylic Bristol Brushes or synthetics, a variety. Tracy loves flats and filberts: #8, 10 and 12 are great sizes
  • A midsize round brush, for example a #10 round
  • Bring any brushes you already have.
  • Flat sided palette knife - we will use this for pushing gels and pastes through stencils

Other

  • Spray bottle for water - especially nice if you have one that mists to keep your paints moist (can repurpose a hair product type spray bottle)
  • Stencils in small to medium size patterns. (ARTspot carries TCW Stencils that are perfect). Tracy will bring some to share as well.
  • Collage materials you like, especially anything representative of you: photos, journal pages, sketches or any paper imagery or ephemera you want to incorporate into your painting. Tracy always has a paper stash you can root through!
  • Ephemera (odds and ends) to help personalize your painting... an earring, buttons, anything that you can imagine embedded into your painting.
  • Apron or old shirt
  • Tracy will bring electric sanders and sandpaper for you to use.
