Description:
A working knowledge of how colors mix is fundamental to painting. This class was designed to help acrylic painting students learn to understand pigments…making painting more satisfying and successful.
We will create a split primary color wheel, and chart colors to learn mass tone and tinting strengths. Other skills we will practice are how to read the paint tubes, blending with gel, and using a palette knife.
This class is great for beginners, but is very useful for painters who have found color mixing frustrating. You will have a hand painted color wheel to proudly display in your own studio!
NOTE! To students…
If you enjoy this class, you can build on your color mixing knowledge with Color Theory 2: Still Life with Complementary Colors
For students of Tracy's Color Theory & Color Mixing Class, we can offer this follow up class to apply your new found knowledge to an actual painting. Follow Tracy step-by-step to analyze and match colors, learn the magic of "Complementary" colors and create a gorgeous floral still life while learning.
If you have taken any of Tracy's past Color Theory Classes, you are ready for Color Theory Two. Let us know if you are interested! If we hear back from enough students, we will schedule CT2!

Paint: For this class Tracy is specific in using Golden Acrylic Paints. No student or economy paints are allowed in this class. You simply cannot learn about pigments with colors that contain fillers. If you are purchasing separately or using colors you already have, these colors below are specific. Please, no substitutions, other than those listed.
Or, just buy this: Golden Color Theory Set of 8 colors, plus add yellow ochre or raw sienna. If you are just getting started, this is a perfect set to start with, and the required set of colors for Color Theory. It includes the first eight colors below.
Titanium White
Hansa Yellow Light (can substitute Cadmium Yellow Light, Azo or Lemon Yellow)
Hansa Yellow Medium or Cadmium Yellow Medium or Hansa Yellow
Napthol Red Light or Cadmium Red Light
Quidacridone Magenta (you can use the more historic Alizarin Crimson but your violets will be more "brownish" with this choice)
Pthalo Blue (Green Shade or Red Shade)
Pthalo Green (Blue Shade or Yellow Shade)
Ultramarine Blue or Anthraquinone Blue
Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna - this color is in addition to the Golden Color Theory boxed set
Note on oil paints: You may also take this class using water soluble oil paints, but still need to meet color requirements listed. Ask ARTspot for assistance in matching colors.
Supports:
Tracy will supply you with bristol board 11x14 for the charting work and color wheel
Palette:
For this class you can get by with just a waxed paper plate, which we will have at the workshop for your use. If you do want to invest in a palette that will keep your acrylic paints from drying out, you can use a rectangular Tupperware type container with lid or can purchase a sealing palette for acrylics to keep paints from drying out. Tracy loves, recommends, and keeps in stock at ARTspot the Artelier Airtight Peel-Off Palette. It saves your paints from one painting session to the next and the lid is super easy to get off and on.
Brushes: Acrylic Bristol Brushes, one or two of these type brushes:
#8, 10 or 12 flats or filberts (about 1/2" across) will work well for blending your color wheel. The new Connoisseur Synthetic Mongoose is perfect for this class! Ask for it at ARTspot!
Flat sided palette knife - super important for this class
Other:
Small misting type spray water bottle to keep paints moist on your palette
Fine or "superfine" black Sharpie
