DESCRIPTION:

This is a dynamic class and will give you some fresh new ways to approach working in acrylics! Students have a blast learning and having fun in Tracy’s Contemporary Acrylics classes!

One of the true joys of painting with acrylics is the ability to add layer upon layer to create a feeling of depth. Acrylics are the perfect medium to add in interesting collage papers, which, depending on when you place them into the painting, will either peek through here and there, or add an interesting focal point at the end as a final touch. But we won’t stop there. Add in a variety of 3-D objects like jewelry findings, small ceramic bits, fabric, or even small stones and finish your painting with resin, creating the look of poured glass!

For this class, we will complete a contemporary style midsize painting in one day starting with sketching out either a face or a vase (Tracy will walk you through it step by step!) then adding collage and paint. You can also choose to do a non-representational abstract if you wish, like the vibrant leafy shapes in the example shown.

You will gain an understanding of opaque paints vs transparent paints, and how and when to choose one over the other. Tracy will also give tips on choosing a harmonious color combination.

This class is a good choice for beginners, as Tracy demonstrates every step so you can see how to handle the paints and the tools. It is also a great class for more experienced painters who are needing some new techniques. It is a fun painting day for all!

From Tracy: "I ENCOURAGE experimentation, so a variety of supplies is welcome. I advise you to use artist quality paints - I use Golden paints as the pigments are pure and bright. You cannot get a good result with student grade paints. How can you tell the difference? Student grade paints will all be priced the same as there is less pigment and “fillers” to even out the prices. It is the fillers that make the colors anemic and easily muddy. Artist grade paints are priced by “Series Number” and the prices reflect the value of the pigment. The only thing in artist grade paints are pure pigments and the binder that holds it together. It’s all about pigment!!"

Palette:

  • You can use a rectangular Tupperware type container with lid or can purchase a sealing palette for acrylics to keep paints from drying out. We recommend the Artelier Airtight Peel-Off Palette.

Paint:

  • Selection of Acrylic artist quality paints. Avoid “cheap” student grade paints! If you are just getting started, my best recommendation is: Golden Color Theory Set of 8 colors. A perfect set to start with. Required for Color Theory if you are interested in taking that class with Tracy. ARTspot also has sets in fluid acrylics and mini tube you can choose from!

Canvas:

  • 12x12, 11x14, 16x16, 16x20”, 16x16, 18x18 or similar size stretched canvas (not panels).

Mediums:

  • Acrylic “Regular” Gel Medium: 8 oz (gloss, semi-gloss or matte)
  • Acrylic “Heavy or Extra Heavy” Gel Medium: 8 oz (gloss, semi-gloss or matte)
  • Optional if you would like to create 3-D effects with Stencils:  Molding Pastes: 8 oz (light, regular, or heavy). If you already have some of these bring a variety. ARTspot has pastes in “Golden” brand and also in tubes by “Pebeo” which are a little cheaper and will work just fine for our purposes.

Brushes:

  • Acrylic Bristol Brushes, variety. I love #8, 10 and 12 flats and filberts (Bring any brushes you already have.)
  • Flat sided palette knife

Resin:

  • Pebeo Crystal Resin - 150 ml Clear. Note: this step is optional. Many artists have been curious how to use the resin to augment their artwork, so this is a chance to not only see this product demonstrated by Tracy, but it but to actually use it! Because it takes 24 hours to set up, you can choose leave your painting at Cole Studio to be picked up Sunday or Monday when it is ready to transport.

Other:

  • Collage materials you like, although I will have a selection of papers for you to use here. Can be any kind of paper, maps, journal pages, pieces of watercolor paintings, handmade papers, calendar pages, gift wrap paper, old photos, music sheets.
  • Ephemera: These will go into the painting! Any assortment of jewelry findings, small ceramic bits, fabric, or even small stones. A great way to utilize old earrings or broken jewelry bits. In the two examples you will see buttons, beads, bits of poetry, etc in the portrait “Hair.” There are ceramic disks and googly eyes in the floral painting, to give you examples of "anything goes!"
  • 6x6 or 12x12 stencil of your choice. ARTspot carries artist designed stencils by TCW (The Crafters Workshop) and Tracy uses these specifically for the patterning effects they provide. Tracy will bring some stencils to share so you can have some variety. If you want, you can wait until the class breaks for lunch and come over to ARTspot to choose a stencil with some guidance from Tracy -OR- bring some stencils you already have.
  • Spray bottle for water
  • Apron or old shirt
