Description:
This 2-day course will be dedicated to drawing and painting expressive portraits, and is open to students who have at least a little portrait drawing experience. If you’ve taken Joe’s drawing courses, or you’ve had a drawing or painting class with another instructor that included a little portraiture, that will be great! Here you’ll take what you’ve learned about portraiture, and then you’ll go a little wild and free!
First, Joe will review some different portrait drawing and measuring techniques - so you will be able to get the eyes, nose and mouth in the right place - and some anatomy tips for drawing the features correctly. And after the review, then the class will launch into the expressive, creative side!
Joe will show you unusual ways to create expressive, emotional, funny, ugly, beautiful and surreal portraits. You will use drawing techniques such as blind contour, partial peek contour and minimalist line/mass to draw portraits. You will also start drawings and paintings in some unusual ways: with non-objective marks; with spontaneous abstract block-in; even using old, bad paintings as under-paintings; and then finding faces in the abstracts and developing them to a final portrait. Combining human features with animal features or floral plants also will be tried!
This course will be centered around watercolors, pastels and acrylics as the core mediums, but bring charcoals and inks, too - and your creative spirit! (Please note: we won’t be using oils for this workshop.)
Wear old clothes and prepare to have a great time! This course is designed to have fun, to be creative and to loosen up.
