Description:

For some encouragement, watch this great little message from Angela: https://youtu.be/SrgpDmvlvRE

Our “Discovery!” series was developed for brand new students. These 1-day workshops provide a cheerful, inspiring and non-intimidating place, where you are surrounded by other new students (not seasoned artists), and led step-by-step by an instructor who loves teaching beginners.  Come on! Join the fun and make a Discovery!

Painting should be fun and an outlet for your creative energy, and you should feel safe to learn in an environment that is helpful and encouraging and NOT judgmental or stressful. This is the place for that! An award-winning artist in acrylics herself, Angela will give you a great introduction on how to get started in this versatile medium, helping you to feel more confident through the skills you will be practicing and the tools you’ll get to know.

What you can expect to learn:

  • which brands of paints work best within your budget

  • what kinds of brushes make what kind of marks, and what brands to buy

  • helpful tools to aid you in getting your drawing, values, and colors right

  • where to begin and how to move forward without getting “stuck”

What to bring: A smile, your lunch, and your painting supplies

Supply List:

Angela has compiled a list of course materials for your course at dickblick.com

ACRYLIC PAINTS:

Angela prefers M.Graham; though Golden, Liquitex Pro, Holbein are acceptable! Angela highly recommends using one of the three brands mentioned, and does not recommend Liquitex Basics, Pebeo Studio or any store brand paint (other than Blick’s) as they are too transparent and will not allow the student to effectively create a painting in this class. Colors:

Art Supplies - Golden set of 6 acrylic paints.PNG
  • Titanium White

  • Cadmium Yellow Light

  • Quinacridone Rose (alternate could be or Alizarin Crimson Permanent or Quin. Red)

  • Ultramarine Blue

  • Burnt Umber

 BRUSHES:

  • One inch sized flat brush

  • One 1/4-1/2-inch flat or filbert brush

  • One round brush, small-to-medium sized (if it has a nice point to it, size doesn’t matter too much.)

  • Palette Knife for mixing paint - a plastic one will be included in the items provided by Angela, but if you plan to purchase one, she recommends a metal palette knife (small-medium one with a diamond shape, pointy at the tip, works best)

Palette:  Disposable paper palettes work well for acrylic paint. Some people prefer a stay-wet palette. Bring what you have or what fits best in your budget. Angela uses a disposable paper palette, so that is just fine. The palette must be flat with no wells or indents.

Canvas: 9x12 or 11x14-inch canvas or canvas panel

Other:
Easel: Tabletop or standing easel. If you don’t have an easel, try putting a roll of paper towels under your canvas panel
