Description:
For some encouragement, watch this great little video from Angela: https://youtu.be/SrgpDmvlvRE
Our “Discovery!” series was developed for brand new students. These 1-day workshops provide a cheerful, inspiring and non-intimidating place, where you are surrounded by other new students (not seasoned artists), and led step-by-step by an instructor who loves teaching beginners. Come on! Join the fun and make a Discovery!
Painting should be fun and an outlet for your creative energy, and you should feel safe to learn in an environment that is helpful and encouraging and NOT judgmental or stressful. This is the place for that! In her fun and super-helpful way, Angela will give you a great step-by-step introduction into painting with oils, helping you to feel more confident through the skills you will be practicing and the tools you’ll get to know.
What you can expect to learn:
which brands of paints work best within your budget
what kinds of brushes make what kind of marks, and what brands to buy
helpful tools to aid you in getting your drawing, values, and colors right
where to begin and how to move forward without getting “stuck”
What to expect: A cheerful, encouraging, relaxing environment
What to wear: Clothes that can get stained
What to bring: A smile, your lunch, and your painting supplies
Supply List:
For home delivery of your supplies, Angela has compiled a list of course materials for your course at dickblick.com. To visit this list, please go to https://www.dickblick.com/lists/blicku/H871C6GUE8ZB5/publicview/
OIL PAINT:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Quinacridone Rose (alternate could be Alizarin Crimson Permanent or Quinacridone Red)
Ultramarine Blue
Burnt Umber
MEDIUMS:
Walnut Oil (for cleaning your brushes during painting process instead of mineral spirits)
Walnut Alkyd Medium (a fast dry medium)Palette: disposable paper palettes work well, but a permanent palette will keep the paints for longer - wood, plastic or glass work well too.
BRUSHES:
About a one-inch size filbert or bright brush
One 1/4-inch flat or filbert brush
One round brush, small-to-medium sized (if it has a nice point to it, size doesn’t matter too much.)
Palette Knife for mixing paint - a plastic one will be included in the items provided by Angela, but if you plan to purchase one, she recommends a metal palette knife (small-medium one with a diamond shape, pointy at the tip, works best)
PALETTE
Although disposable paper palettes work for oil, Angela recommends a permanent palette to keep the oil paints for longer, such as wood, plastic or glass. Whatever you get, the palette must be flat with no wells or indents.
OTHER:
Canvas: one 9x12 inch canvas or canvas panel
Paper Towels
Glass container with lid for walnut oil
Box to carry the wet oil painting in after class
Box to carry the wet oil palette in after class
Easel: Tabletop or standing easel. If you don’t have an easel, try putting a roll of paper towels under your canvas
