Description:
This is a great 5-week course we’ve put together for all our students who “paint” in pastels, from beginners to more experienced pastel students. From this beloved pastel instructor you’ll gain skills and knowledge on a range of topics as she helps you explore the vibrant world of pastels.
Janis will teach and demo on a new topic each week. You’ll cover subjects such as composition, design, accurate measurement and proportions, surface preparation, and color choice. You can bring photos of your favorite landscapes, or you can use the photo references Janis will supply.
What you’ll learn:
Preparing substructures:
with texture: prepare sanded boards for pastels
with color: toning canvases with gouache, learning which colors to use for various effects
Composition:
How to avoid tangents, eliminate unnecessary items, and create variation within your design
How to build your design: methods that can be employed to help in building your composition, such as thumbnails, application on tablets (iPad), gridlines, etc.
All about Color:
Using Color to create mood in your painting: color choices and placement, Chiaroscuro, high and low key, vibrancy, etc.
Color notes and color relevance
Learning to understand how colors will appear depending on what surrounds them
Finishing your painting:
How to know when the painting is finished
How to fix the pastel and prepare for framing

Supply fee: $15 for optional materials
Pastels:
Hard Pastels: NuPastel set of 24
Soft Pastels: Richeson, set of 24. Or Unison, Terry Ludwig, or Rembrandt. (You may need to shop online for some of these soft pastel sets.)
Paper:
Either in 9x12 blocks (enough for 1 - 9x12 per class session)
or 2 full sheets (Janis will help you cut them down to the 9x12 size in class.)
Any of these brands will work:
Canson Mi Teintes paper and/or Canson Mi Teintes color touch
Pastel Premier
UArt Pastel Paper
PastelMat
Art Spectrum Color Fix
(Janis likes to use sanded paper such as UArt or Pastel Premier).
Other:
Ipad/tablet to look at your images, or photos printed out, for reference
Small sketch book and pencil for thumbnail sketches
1 drawing board (gator board, foam core or Masonite will work) – 13x17” to 18x18”
Masking tape or frog tape
1 inexpensive brush ½”, a soft synthetic or watercolor brush
Paper towels
Ruler
Aluminum foil
1 old used toothbrush
1 kneaded eraser
Wet wipes
Easel - Cole has a few of the standing and the tabletop easels; call to reserve one.
Gloves – supplied by Cole
Optional:
8 x 11.5 clear plastic sleeve protector for photos.
Dry erase marker, to draw grid lines on sleeve for measuring proportions
For optional $15 supply fee, Janis will make available different surfaces for you to try, such as golden pumice gel, pastel primer, gouache (if you have sanded paper), etc.
