DESCRIPTION:

Have you been curious about resin? Or maybe you are just hearing about it for the first time. It can be used to create gorgeous art! A newly developed artist resin - Pebeo’s Gedeo Series Resins - add dimension, vibrancy and offers fascinating effects.  In this class, artist Tracy Felix will guide you as you experiment with resin, and you’ll finish two stunning projects in one day.

Project One: Tracy will take you step-by- step creating a mixed media painting using acrylic colors and collage. Super fun in itself, but then, there is the finale… you will finish it by mixing and pouring resin over top of the painting. The clear resin will add shine and enhance the brilliancy to the underlying artwork!

Project Two: Learn to use the new colored resins - Pebeo’s “Fantasy Paints.” It is called “liquid art”, and we will be pouring these lacquer-based paints onto a specially designed raised edge “liquid art panel.” If you haven’t seen these paints yet, you’re in for a treat! This is a delightfully fun and easy process. Tracy will show you her techniques, tips and tricks to working with this new, fun medium to create a work that is really indescribable, echoing the look of crystalline, pearlized paint. This newly developed class promises to be a fun and fascinating adventure!

Optional project: Bring in one of your own pieces of art that you have previously created – in any medium! – and you can pour a little resin here and there to see how clear resin can seal and enhance your art. What Fun!

To see examples of the Pebeo resins, come to ARTspot, just half a block away from Cole Studio. ARTspot has the full line of Pebeo paints and the staff can help you select colors that will give your Resin painting lots of contrast. Make a trip over there to find the liquid art panels as well.

For Project One: Mixed Media Art with Clear Resin over top

Support:

  • 8x8, 8x10, 10x10 or 12x12” stretched canvas, MDF board or cradled birch boards - your choice of depth

Palette:

  • Any Palette - something simple to put out some acrylic colors is fine

Paint:

  • Acrylic Paint - just bring in a few quality colors that you like.

**Note: You can bring in a selection of Acrylic paints you already have, but we always recommend professional artist quality paints. It is better to have a few colors of artist quality fully pigmented color than a full box of “cheap” student grade paints: they have fillers to make them inexpensive and they will frustrate you with dull color mixes! Tracy uses “Golden” brand paints as the pigments are pure and bright.

Brushes:

  • Any synthetic or Bristol brushes you have – ½” and 1” wide flat or filberts would be perfect for this class. ARTspot has Princeton "Snap" brushes for $5-8. If you already have a variety of brushes just bring those. We’ll be using these to create a collage with acrylic paint and acrylic gel mediums.

Acrylic Gel Medium:

  • Regular or Heavy Golden 8oz size, or small tube by Pebeo Studio line should be plenty to create your collage. Your choice of gloss, semi-gloss or matte. Will have resin poured over it so gloss level does not matter here.

Collage materials:

  • Jewelry findings, anything you would like to embed in your mixed media piece. Or you can use the selection from Tracy’s stash of papers!

For Project Two: Purely Poured Resin Art

Support:

  • One 6x6, 8x10 or 10x10” Liquid Art Panel (ARTspot’s are $9.95-$16.50)

Resin:

  • Three Pebeo “Fantasy Paints” Three varieties available: Prism, Moon and Vitrail. There are lots of colors in each of these lines. Any three colors you personally like are fine. If you opt for one of the larger size panels, you may want to buy a few extra colors. (ARTspot -$7.50 each)
  • One “Cerne Relief” outliner in any color you like. This creates shapes to contain the resin. These come in clear, black, glitter and metallic colors. ($6.50 at ARTspot)

Other:

  • Box: Resin takes 24 hours to harden. Bring a box large enough to hold wet artwork flat in your car. If you don’t want to transport them wet you can leave these pieces in the studio to cure overnight and pick up within the next two days, Sunday hours are 11-5, Monday 10-6.

Are you bringing an additional piece of your own are to try clear resin on? (not required) The amount of clear resin Tracy supplies is not enough to fully cover additional pieces, but is enough to provide a sample/test. If you would like to fully coat this test piece, then you will need to purchase a Gedeo Crystal Resin (150 ml for $21.50 at ARTspot). You can bring samples of anything to try resin on: oil (make sure it is dry), pastel, any kind of drawing materials, watercolor, encaustic (wax), or any mixed media work – resin is fabulous over any medium!

Tracy Provides:

  • Clear Crystal Resin, the two-part mix that we will use in class. You can see how easy it is! She will bring a variety of Fantasy Paints to let you add touches of other colors to your piece.
  • Tracy always has a variety of Collage Materials, stencils and other art goodies for her classes!

Cole Gallery Provides:

  • Latex gloves are available for your use in the studio. If you have specific needs for gloves, consider bringing some of your own that you know fit well and meet any requirements for your sensitivities.
