More Drawing with Color: Pastels Part 2

 Description:
If you’ve had some previous pastel experience, whether at Cole Art Studio or elsewhere, this class will be a great next step. For example, if you have completed Beginning Pastels with Joe (or elsewhere), this is the class for you!  

 In this 5-week course, Joe will briefly discuss core painting topics for pastel painting and then proceed to exploring more advanced and creative techniques for expressive watercolor painting, such as Intuition, the Creative Process, Form, Content and Context.  We will be studying some of Joe’s favorite watercolor subjects and the techniques he employs to create his unique, contemporary works.

 These classes will be intensive and very rewarding. For each weekly session, come rested and ready to embrace this great painting medium.  If you want to bring your own image references to work on, please do so, and Joe will provide guidance to each of you.  At the beginning of each session, Joe will also pick a topic and demo how he will approach the painting.  Joe will provide copies of his demo photos to those students who want to follow his demo painting.

 This course will be centered around pastels as the core medium.  However, you will be encouraged to use other mediums to complete your projects. In addition to pastels, Joe will also be using watercolors and ink.

  • Kneaded eraser

  • Hard white eraser

 Charcoals

  • Bob’s Soft Vine charcoal (variety of sizes, ¼” and larger)

  • Soft Compressed charcoal bricks (Alphacolor Char-Kole)

  • Pentalic woodless charcoal pencils, in a 3-piece set

  • White charcoal or soft white pastel by other brands

 (All the above are included in the Joe MacKechnie Custom Drawing Kit)

 Paper  

  • 2 full sized individual sheets of Arches hot press watercolor paper, 140#

  • UArt 400 grade sanded pastel pad, 10 sheets, beige 9”x12”
    Or, Art Spectrum Colorfix coated pastel paper pack, 10 sheets, 9”x12”, warm tones pack

 Pastels (no oil pastels)

  • Richeson soft pastel starter set of 24 colors, half stick

  • Or an equivalent, such as Holbien or Art Spectrum

 Other

  • Large foam-core board with clips 18x24” or equivalent

  • Soft paper towels (Bounty extra soft or Kleenex)

  • Art box for carrying your art supplies

  • Soft makeup brush
