Painting the Portrait in the Russian Impressionist Tradition

Description:
Learn to paint from life in the Russian Impressionist's tradition, in rich and vibrant, living color! This class is designed to take each student through the basics of painting portraits with oils - exploring value, color temperature, intensity and edges. If you're just starting out, Pam will teach you the very basics. If you're more experienced, you will learn more about the way light falls across a person's head and face to create drama and mood. There will be 2 models each day for you to choose from.
Class will begin with a portrait demo Thursday evening, starting promptly at 6:00 pm. This is an integral part of your workshop. Please arrange your schedules so that you can arrive early enough on Thursday to watch the evening painting demonstration, with plenty of time for questions afterwards.
The next three days will be an immersion into painting the portrait, with 2 models to choose from each day. On these days, there will be 45-minute lunch break - feel free to bring your lunch. Paints: Artists grade oil paints. *ARTspot carries Gamblin

Brushes:
Flats and Filberts: #4, 6 & 8 (depending on the brands, approximately 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch and 1 inch) - but
Pam likes to paint with flat, soft natural hair brushes or synthetic sable substitutes; if you have rounds or filberts already, that will work just fine.
Palette Knife
Large Palette:
It could be just a piece of glass about 16" x 20", with white paper taped to the back, a white plastic palette, or a wooden palette.
Supports:
Canvases, Masonite Boards (with two coats of Gesso), or pre-gessoed Gesso Board in a variety of sizes - small (5x7) to as large as you’re comfortable with (16x20). Bring at least 4, or even 6 or 7 isn’t too many, depending on how fast you paint. (You can always use them later.)
Easel – Standing easel (the Studio has about 6 easels. Please call to reserve one if you wish.)
Linseed oil and small tuna can to contain it
Miscellaneous :
Odorless mineral spirits such as Gamsol. Note: no smelly mediums, turpentine or regular mineral spirits will be allowed.
Paper Towels or paint rags (Pam likes Viva or shop towels)
Something to bring your painting home in (cardboard box, etc.)
Paper Sack for trash
Bring a lunch for your 45-minute break, if you think you’ll be too rushed to go out. Cole Art Studio also has several menus from local restaurants within a 2-block radius, from which you may choose to order food to pick up and bring back.
