DESCRIPTION:

We’ve often asked Janis Graves to teach workshops in the medium of pastels, but this time we asked her to share with students her latest techniques in oil painting.

Whether in pastels or oils, painting animals and birds with style and attitude is Janis’ forté! In this 2-day workshop, Janis will share with you her technique of creating a vibrant painting with intense color in oil, while showing how to capture that attitude we love in her birds and beasts.

With step-by- step instruction from Janis, you’ll first create your composition and also a vibrant underpainting using intense color. Using more traditional colors on top, you’ll structure the animal or bird (maybe both if you are a fast painter!) in that vibrant background space. Then with a fresh eye on the second day, you will refine your subject, placing more natural colors, and finish your painting. Janis has found this technique to result in paintings that almost seem to vibrate with life. Come and try something new!

Oil Paints: (Janis prefers a good quality professional brand such as Gamblin oils)
Titanium Zinc White

Sap Green
Yellow ochre
Pthalo Green
Burnt Umber
Burnt Sienna
(if Cadmium is too expensive, Gamblin has modern versions of same colors)

Optional colors:
Transparent Earth Yellow
Red Iron Oxide
Cobalt Blue
Dioxazine purple

Mediums: Odorless mineral spirits, such as Gamsol by Gamblin, in an airtight container. 
Alkyd or other mediums such as Galkyd, Solvent Free Galkyd or Neomegilp
Please note: no stinky mediums will be allowed. 

Canvas board or stretched canvas
9x12 or 11x14 - one or two depending on how many paintings students would like to attempt

Brushes
Synthetic Double size (long handled brushes):  Bright #4, Filberts or Flats numbers 6, 8, 10

Pallet knife – off-set style (a bend in it) medium size, approx. 3” knife
