Location: ArtWorks in Edmonds - a lovely, large space with plenty of parking places! Just a few blocks from Cole at the corner of 2nd Ave and Dayton Street: 201 2nd Ave, Edmonds, WA 98020
Description:
Join award-winning artist Amanda Houston and take this opportunity to learn more about painting with pastels, focusing on brilliant clouds, sky holes in trees and colorful water reflections as your subject matter.
This workshop is either a 2-day (Saturday-Sunday) OR a 3-day (Saturday-Monday) – pick what’s best for you and your schedule. Amanda’s students always want more of whatever she chooses to teach! Plus, we’re moving it over to ArtWorks – just 3 blocks away from Cole Gallery, with an airy, large space and their own parking lot. Notice also the extended time (until 6pm on Saturday, 5pm on Sunday and Monday); come rested and prepared to absorb as much info as you can – Amanda is a very generous instructor.
While you are learning Amanda’s secrets of how to create brilliant skies and colorful reflections on water, she will also demo several different techniques on various surfaces to achieve different results. You will have the option to learn to create your own surface by painting a sanded gesso to a board or metal – supplies for this option will be provided by the instructor for the $20 supply fee – please bring cash or check payable to Amanda.
You can expect daily demos, loosening-up exercises, and plenty of individual instruction at your easel for you to learn these techniques with your own subject matter and materials. Whether you choose the 2-day or the 3-day workshop, it will be jam-packed with tips and tricks on how to create a beautifully successful painting.
Some experience in pastels is necessary.

Pastels: As many as you can bring, with a mixture of soft and hard pastels, with a range of brights, darks and grey tones. NO oil pastels.
Soft pastels (60-100):
As many as you have. If you don't have any buy at least a 60-80 piece (half stick) landscape or intro set such as Sennelier - 80 half stick or similar good quality soft pastel set.
Amanda uses a variety of Unison, Great American, Blue Earth, Terry Ludwig, and Schminke. (She likes www.dakotapastels.com as a good resource for pastel sticks. You can buy them a la carte as well as in sets.)
Hard Pastels:
Drawing Board: Gator-board (preferably black but white will work) or Masonite board work well for taping your papers and inspiration references on.
Papers:
If you have a favorite, please bring it. Amanda will be demoing on LaCarte paper (Sienna color), Art Spectrum Colorfix, Multi Media Pastel Artist Panel or Mounted Wallis. You can buy a large sheet of your preference and cut them down into smaller workable sizes for the class: 8x10, 9x12, 11x14 or 12x16. We will focus on lots of small work.
Easel:
Any field easel will work, like a French easel. Cole Gallery has some loaner easels to use. Amanda uses a Heilman pastel box on a tripod.
Misc. Supplies:
- 1 – 1 ½" small, inexpensive hardware brush
- Different sized “Snap!” brushes by Princeton: #6, 8 Bright AND ½” or ¾” Stroke brush (optional, but Amanda likes them because they are synthetic & a good value. She uses them for the underpainting.)
- Any workable fixative for between layers of pastel (these enable you to layer and to go back and re-work if necessary)
- Lascaux fixative for finish work (this is the brand Amanda uses, but others work too.)
For the $20 supply fee (please bring cash or a check to the instructor), the instructor will provide gator board, copper plates, sanded gesso medium, roller and sandpaper, as well as lecture, demo and hands-on guidance if people want to try this technique.
She will also have extra paper if people want to purchase more from her.
