 Description:
This is a great 5-week course we’ve put together for all our students who paint in Oils, Acrylics, or Pastels. From a beloved instructor who is experienced in all 3 mediums, you’ll gain skills and knowledge on a range of painting elements as you work on your own paintings.

In this atelier-style course, Janis will teach and demo on a new topic each week during the morning session (“Option A”).  You’ll be covering subjects such as composition, design, accurate measurement and proportions, surface preparation, color choice and mixing. She’ll also teach on how to set up still lifes, and you’ll have an opportunity to paint from a live set up. You’ll then spend time painting in the medium of your choice on your own project, while Janis helps each student individually. Students should bring photo references to paint.

Many of you wanted the opportunity to keep right on painting through the afternoon, with continued guidance from Janis. If this extra painting time is just what you’ve been wanting, take advantage of “Option B”. During the afternoons, you’ll be free to paint on your own project, but Janis will be there to help with your questions and inspire you with her tips, tricks and ideas. You’ll also have the energy and encouragement of the other students in the studio, which is always a further inspiration. (Note: a minimum number of students is needed for the afternoon session to take place.)

What you’ll learn:
Preparing substructures:
- with texture: prepare sanded boards for pastels; moulding pastes for oil/acrylic.
- with color: toning canvases, learning which colors to use for various effects.

Methods that can be employed to help in building your composition: Thumbnail, application on tablets (iPad), gridlines, etc.

Composition: Exploration in how to avoid tangents, how to eliminate unnecessary items, and how to create variation within your design.

 All about Color:
- Using Color to create mood in your painting: color choices and placement, Chiaroscuro, high and low key, vibrancy, etc.
- Color notes (pastels), color mixing (oils and acrylics) and color relevance
- Learning to understand how colors will appear depending on what surrounds them

Students love this class! They comment on how much they learn – not only from Janis as she teaches, but also from the class camaraderie. Students who’ve taken this in the past will be able to learn new things each time they take it. Sign up today!
