Description:
Enjoy two days of painting with pastel with this super-fun instructor! Her students love her, and find her to be patient, kind and very low key, while teaching them a TON. This class would be suitable for students with at least a little experience with pastels.
Pastel is an immediate medium - it needs no mixing or drying. This can also be a challenging aspect, and Janis will help you overcome challenges while teaching you various basic (and not-so-basic) techniques. Also, she is all about color!
Day One –
We’ll use various techniques for applying pastel to various papers.
You’ll learn about preparing substructures -
o with texture: preparing sanded boards for pastels
o with color: toning paper (with alcohol), learning which colors to use for various effects.
o With gouache: Janis will demo how to use this water-based medium as an underpainting. If you would like to try this technique, Janis will supply the gouache for the $15 supply fee.
Color application - they may be line drawn or “painterly”. Janis will demo and you’ll try various methods of applying color during this class.
Second Day – Color!
The focus of this day will be on the use of color: Learning how to use value, hue, and intensity to create vibrant pastel paintings. It’s all in the use of color! Pastels open up an exciting way to explore these avenues, like how to use color to create mood in your painting with your color choices (who says the sky has to be blue and the trees green?!), color placement, Chiaroscuro, high and low key, vibrancy, etc. We will also consider color relevance: how a color is affected by the local color – learning to understand how colors will appear depending on what surrounds them.
This day will be open to any subject you wish to work on. Bring your own reference photos, or use the photos Janis will provide.
Come to this exciting workshop to learn all about these topics and more!
