WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This class will help you take your painting process outdoors!

It's always more difficult to paint from life, especially when people are milling around you; but your work will be more lively and free when learn to take your skills on the road. We will be working outdoors, weather permitting, in local settings chosen in advance by the artist.* Working in either acrylic or oil, students will bring portable painting equipment, which Angela will help you figure out. The great thing about painting on location is that you don't need much, and you are forced to cut back on your supplies. Most locations are close enough to walk to; some may require a short drive.

During inclement weather we will be working from photos in the studio, and Angela will show you how you can creatively edit the scene, to take what you know about photography, along with the tools she will give you for design, and use it to your benefit when translating that photo into a rich painting.

*Check your email each evening before class to find your location - or meet up with the artist at Cole Gallery each morning. If you do not have email, just let Angela know the best way to reach you.

Artspot's Web Site

Oil or Acrylic Paint:

  • Anthroquinone Blue
  • Cadmium Red Medium
  • Cadmium Yellow Light
  • Dioxazine Purple
  • Titanium Buff (I use this IN PLACE of white, with bright white only added at the very end of my process) *for Oil Painters, use Warm White instead of Titanium Buff (unless using water soluble oils, then use Titan Buff)
  • Burnt Umber (this is very handy for mixing rich grays)
  • Hooker's Green Hue (Oil Painters, bring Sap Green)
  • Titanium White

Brushes:

  • One medium Flat, Bright or Filbert brush, like a #6
  • One Large Flat or Bright brush for covering the canvas with color
  • One small round brush, like a #4
  • Plus any other brushes you might have.
  • I prefer to use inexpensive synthetic long-handled brushes for my acrylics, but a mix of natural and synthetic for my oils

OTHER ITEMS:

  • Plastic water jar with lid
  • One or two 5x7 to 8x10-inch supports: please prep these by painting a coat or two of white gesso first (oil painters, you can use acrylic gesso on new surfaces, but you cannot paint an acrylic gesso over an old oil painting: to do that you must use an oil-based gesso or ground).
  • Very small sketch pad for thumbnails
  • Pencil
  • Paper or travel palette to mix paints on (I use a paper palette when I paint plein air, I don't worry about the stay-wet palettes, but you can use what you're comfortable with).
  • Rags or paper towel (I like the blue shop towels!)
  • A plein aire easel (see my blog post about how to choose supplies for plein air painting: http://www.angelabandurka.com/blog/2014/3/29/how-to-paint-on-location)
  • Bags for your garbage
  • Digital camera or camera phone
  • Sunscreen, hat and fresh water for staying hydrated.
