Description:
Ancient and beautiful, Sumi-e (or ink wash) paintings - also called Notans - are full of simple elegance and harmony, of vitality and yet at the same time restrained. Do you find this intriguing? Want to give it a try? This is the workshop for you! Grab a friend and get ready to have a ball! Painting in the traditional Sumi-e style is a wonderful form of artistic expression.

Many students have taken this Sumi-e class from Joe in a 1-day format, and have been clamoring for a longer time-span to go deeper, to learn more from Joe and to practice. Here is your chance! We are offering this with two options:

  • the ONE-day workshop which will focus on introductory Sumi-e techniques, using Sumi-e inks and paper.

  • the TWO-day workshop which will focus on Sumi-e color techniques, using watercolors and watercolor paper, and Notans (black and white studies)

More details:
In the 1-day, Joe will introduce you to the wonderful world of creating Sumi-e art, focusing on introductory Sumi-e techniques, using Sumi-e inks and paper.  It will include demo, hands-on learning, and Sumi-e background, including an introduction into Eastern Painting techniques and design. You’ll learn about Sumi materials like the special paper and brushes, brushwork, and how to paint with efficiency, simplicity, rhythm and tempo. And how not to overpaint!

The 2nd day will focus on Sumi-e color techniques, using watercolors and watercolor paper, as well as Notans (black and white studies). You will go deeper into the art of Sumi-e, and focusing on color. If you are already a watercolorist, Sumi-e painting is a great way to improve your watercolor techniques!  Joe will connect East and West, teaching you how to use these Eastern techniques with Western tools – our brushes and pens - and some new composition and design principles. Get ready for an amazing day improving your techniques and learning some great new skills!

By the way, if you are only signed up for the 1-day, and decide to stay for the 2nd day, you’ll just need to pay the balance of $100.
