In this course, Margaret will lead you through contemporary languages of drawing, encouraging you to find your own particular comfort zone. Together, she and her students will play with various drawing tools, finding the expressive potential of each. Though basic skills will find their way into each class, such as rendering form in value, line, creating perspective and such, the focus is not on meeting someone else’s standard of excellence, but of finding delight in the style that comes naturally to you.

Margaret will guide you in discovering that you already can naturally draw expressively. You will draw with pencils, charcoal, ink, and other perhaps surprising mediums. You’ll try out foundational artistic principles more with the objective of giving you confidence to go your own way than to make you get things so-called “right.” You will practice with proportion, use light and shadow, line, and perspective. This course will build a solid foundation of drawing skills for a lifetime of creativity. Starting out with a simple shape, step by step, you will build on what you learn each week. Your skills will increase with your deepening understanding of light, shadow, shading and more. You will gain skill in creating smooth gradations of tone and creating a convincing illusion of light and shadow.
This class is great for beginners or for students who wish to develop their confidence in drawing . Kathleen is great at working with students of different levels and will make sure each student has the help and challenges to encourage their own growth.

Drawing Supply List
This is a list of required and optional supplies for class. Specific brands are for reference only, if you have something similar, use that. If you have trouble finding something, then forget it. Margaret will share.

Canson XL Mix Media Sketchbook for thumbnail sketches and notes
Stonehenge Drawing paper for finished drawings – quality, white drawing paper, 11x14 or larger
Large Newsprint pad
Drawing Tools
A range of drawing pencils 2H – 8B Tombow Drawing Pencils or Lumograph Drawing Pencils
charcoal sticks: both vine charcoal and compressed
set of four conté crayons : black, white, siena, brown
two or three black ink drawing pens, of different thicknesses
bottle of drawing ink
bamboo or watercolor brush
Pencil sharpener or a blade and sandpaper
Erasers
A kneaded eraser
A white vinyl eraser or good ol’ pink pearl type
Pen-type eraser- large and/or small
Soft brush for removing eraser crumbs
Optional - But Nice to Have!
A drawing board good for drawing at an easel, large enough for your drawing paper
A roll (or pad) of tracing paper - many uses
A roll (or pad) of glassine to protect drawings from smudging in storage or transport
Graphite (wax-less) transfer paper
Electric eraser
A small plastic t-square
Spray workable fixative and final fixative
A folder to keep drawings in (make one from foamboard)
