Painting Underwater Animals in Oil or Acrylic w/ Joyful - August 29 / 10:30-4:30: All Levels
Sat / August 29 / 10:30-4:30
All Levels Welcome, Including Beginners!
Spend a full Saturday painting marine wildlife in the ocean (the wildlife, not you) with Joyful, masterful artist of underwater scenes. In this one-day workshop, you'll paint a harbor seal or other animal of your choice, drifting through kelp, using just a few colors: red, yellow, and shades of blue. You'll learn how oil paint works, how to build a painting in layers, and how a limited palette creates color that feels rich and cohesive. Students who wish to paint in acrylic are welcome to do that as well!
With demonstrations, individual guidance, and plenty of encouragement, this class is perfect for beginners and experienced painters alike.
Come paint, learn, and have fun! All levels are welcome!

Participants will begin with introductions, setup, and an overview of the day's painting process before transferring a simple outline of a seal (or your animal of choice ) onto the canvas. The morning will focus on creating an underpainting using the oil painting principle of working from thin to thick, establishing dark and light values that will guide later color work. After lunch, we'll explore basic color mixing using a limited palette and discuss the unique qualities of underwater light, including its blue-green glow and soft, filtered effects. Students will then build their paintings by developing the seal, kelp, and surrounding water with richer color and thicker paint. The day concludes with final refinements, a group sharing session, Q&A, and tips for transporting wet paintings and continuing to paint at home.
