Exploring Pastel w/ Janis Graves - March 15-16: All Levels

In this two day workshop, students will have a chance to really dig into creating a beautiful pastel painting, start to finish. Janis will cover a range of topics including understanding color, composition, and how to bring life into your paintings. Students will delve into the use of color in pastel, learning to create exciting color mixes using hue and temperature. Janis will help each student select subjects according to individual preference. We will work from photos and/or phones or iPads. Most of all we’ll have a fun weekend!

Description:
During this workshop you’ll learn how to paint a lush landscape from the Pacific Northwest with Janis by your side sharing advice on composition, and tips on how to draw trees and water while capturing light using vibrant pastels.
Supplies:
Pastels:
NuPastel set of 12 or 24
Richeson soft pastels set of 24 (or a set each of primary & secondary colors)
Any selection of pastels you have (such as Unison, Terry Ludwig, etc.)
Paper:
At least 2 sheets, 9x12 or larger. Any of these brands will work:

U Art Pastel Paper
PastelMat
Art Spectrum Color Fix
Mi Tientes
Other:
Photo for reference (please print out at home)
Dry erase pens (Janis will show you how to make a grid)
1 tote board 13x17 or 18x18, or hardboard of 16x20 (such as gator board, foam core, etc)
1 inexpensive brush ½” to 1”
1 old used toothbrush
1 kneaded eraser
Masking tape or frog tape
Ruler
Aluminum foil
Paper towels
Wet wipes
