Saturday, May 17 / 10:30-4:30

Cole Art Studio is delighted to offer a one-day workshop taught by Seattle’s beloved “Urban Sketcher,” founder of Sketcher Fest Edmonds, Gabriel Campanario. Learn all the best tips and techniques for sketching in watercolor and pen & ink on the go from a master of the art. If it is sunny, Gabi will be taking the class outdoors; if not, bring photos of your favorite travels to work from.

This workshop is aimed at drawing enthusiasts who want to capture their travel experience using a small sketchbook and very few tools. To embrace this minimalist sketching lifestyle, you travel light so you can whip out your sketchbook at any given moment. You learn to draw while standing up, leaning against a wall, or in nearly any circumstances that may arise as you look and wander.

Location: Students will meet at Cole Art Studio, located on the lower level of Cole Gallery, 107 5th Ave. S., Edmonds, WA 98020.

Rather than spending your vacation staring through your phone’s camera app, directly capture travel sights at the scene. With a pencil, pen, or brush in hand, make visual memories more precious than any photograph lost in a sea of online files.

Local legend Gabi Campanario, the renowned “Urban Sketcher” long featured in The Seattle Times, is joining with Cole Art Studio to teach a one-day workshop in travel sketching, and if the weather permits, using Edmonds & its waterfront as his classroom.

The workshop covers a range of useful drawing tips to help participants develop a sustainable, fun, and uncomplicated sketching practice.

Learning goals:

● How to hold the sketchbook and draw standing up

● Sight measuring tips to make big scenes fit across a spread

● How to flesh out your line drawings with an ink wash

● Storytelling: Adding notes and writing

Supply list:

● Small, pocket-size sketchbook (3.5” by 5.5” or A6). If this size feels too small, you may bring a medium-size sketchbook (5.7” x 8.25”)

● 3B pencil (optional)

● Waterproof ink pen of your choice (Micron PN or Uniball);

A note from Gabi on the paper – The sketchbook paper should be thick enough to hold watercolor. Standard watercolor paper weights are 90 lb, 140 lb, and 300 lb. Gabriel says, “The Stillman and Birn sketchbooks I normally use have paper weights of 150 gsm and 270 gsm.” (a standardized measurement “grams per square meter”)  Try the great watercolor sketchbooks available at ARTspot.
