Discovery! A Very Beginning Experience with Pastels

Our “Discovery!” series is just for beginners! If you want to check out wonderful creamy, soft, vibrant pastels – here is the perfect opportunity! Taught by our beloved Joe Mac Kechnie, who is absolutely great with brand new beginners, you will create a piece of art with movement and vibrancy. The Drawing Experience Pt. 1

The Watercolor Experience Part 2

Open to all watercolor painters, whether you’ve taken a beginning class by one of our instructors or you just want to further your watercolor painting skills. In this 5-week class, you’ll briefly revisit core techniques of painting with this wonderful medium, then explore more advanced and creative techniques. You’ll study and learn to employ the techniques of some of the Watercolor Greats, and will advance in your own ability to create beautiful watercolor paintings.

Beginning Portraits in Charcoal, Pastel and Watercolor

A great class for beginners at portraits who want to take their drawing and painting to the next level!
Artist and beloved instructor Joe Mac Kechnie will guide you in your very first portrait. The first two classes will be dedicated to how to draw the portrait using charcoal. You will discover that drawing the portrait is easier and more fun than you previously might have thought. In the last three classes, we will explore painting the portrait using watercolors and pastels.

Sumi-e Art and Notan Painting
w/ Joe Mac Kechnie

Elegance and harmony, ancient and beautiful, traditional ink wash paintings are a wonderful form of artistic expression! This 1-day or 2-day workshop will be a great introduction to Sumi technique, design and materials. Also – if you’re already a watercolorist, it’s a great way to improve your watercolor techniques. Perfect for all levels!

Watercolor Steps 1 and 2 – two separate sessions, of 4 Monday evenings each, whichcover all the basics of painting with Watercolors! Watercolor Step 1 will be the “Basic basics” – an introduction into the amazing world of Watercolor, focusing on materials and basic techniques. This is THE place to start if you are a beginner. WS2 will build on the first series. Take just one, or take both!

Drawing Lab 1~ Great Basics for Beginning Drawing

Suminagashi Paper Marbling & Intro to Bookbinding

Learn the beautiful art of Suminagashi – Japanese paper marbling. Mix your own inks, create patterns and swirls in a water bath, then transfer the ink to paper or fabric. Then create wonderful handmade books using Irish linen thread and your own marbled paper on the covers. Beautiful! And just in time for Valentine’s Day giving to a loved one!

If you love color and patterns and want to learn how to create it in beautiful wax colors, this is the “Try
It!” class for you! Tracy will show you how to paint with hot, pigmented wax, layering color and creating
patterns using stencils, and you’ll finish your encaustic painting with alcohol ink to add even more color and shine! Great for all levels.

Discovery! “I Can’t Draw a Portrait” 1-Day

Beginning Finger Painting 1-Day

In this 1-day workshop, students will learn how to finger paint! Following this wonderful instructor as she takes you step-by- step, you’ll enjoy taking your painting from ordinary to extraordinary using vibrant color to enhance a cloud-dotted sky. While created for beginners to the art of finger painting fun, this workshop is also open to non-beginners who want to continue to perfect their technique. Oil Painting in The Russian Impressionist Tradition

With renowned impressionist Pam Ingalls, learn to oil paint in this beautiful style of “liquid light”. Going through the basics - exploring value, color value and more - this experienced instructor is able to take you from wherever you are to the next level. All levels are very welcomed!

Watercolor Step Two: Beyond the Basics
w/ James Farrand

Mondays / March 5, 12, (skip 19th), 26 & April 2 / 1-3 pm

Watercolor Step 2 is a course of 4 Monday evenings which, together with Watercolor Step 1, covers the basics and beyond of painting with Watercolors! Building on the basics introduced in Step 1, Step 2 will continue this process as well as dig much deeper into color. Take these back to back, or if you have already had some basics elsewhere, start in with Step 2!


Drawing Lab 2: Beyond the Basics w/ James Farrand

Mondays / 6-8 pm / March 5, 12, (skip 19th), 26 & April 2

“Beyond the Basics” is the second part of a 2-part series. If you’ve had beginning drawing and feel the need to learn more on this topic, you can take this class - even if you haven’t taken James’ Drawing Lab 1. Focus will be on techniques for making accurate measurements and how to transfer that to your drawing. Students will also learn and understand how to arrange and place all the elements of a given drawing into a cohesive and unified composition - which is much more engaging and compelling for the viewer.

Painting Light and Reflections in Pastel w/ Amanda Houston

2-Day: Sat-Sun / March 10-11 / 10:30-5:00 pm
3-Day: Sat-Mon / March 10-12 / 10:30-5:00 pm

Create colorful water reflections and brilliant clouds in pastel with this award-winning artist and instructor! This 2- or 3-day workshop will be a great mix of theory, technique and experimentation. Amanda will share her knowledge of pastels and how to use different techniques on different surfaces to achieve great results. Packed full of good design principles to make ANY painting successful. Some experience in pastels is necessary.

Contemporary Painting: Paint a Series
w/ Tracy Felix

What a great idea: instead of one painting at a time, paint a group of paintings!  When you create several paintings in a session, you’ll see growth in productivity, creativity, style, cohesiveness….
And your paintings will look great grouped together! This class is focused on acrylic mixed media painting techniques which Tracy will demo throughout the day. You’ll grow and have lots of fun!

This advanced workshop is open to any students that have taken a finger painting workshop with Kimberly. Students will have the choice to 1) paint along with Kimberly as she leads through finger
painting techniques that lend to a more detailed painting of the Lime Kiln Lighthouse located at Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands; or 2) paint from a photo of their choice, with Kimberly there to guide composition and color selection as well as assist as needed so student will go home with a finished painting.

Try It! Fun with Acrylic Designs w/Kim Brayman

Friday / March 23 / 6-8:30pm

This is a “Try-It” class – just 2 ½ hours on a Friday night to experiment with creating designs with acrylic paints. Create two paintings using design techniques that are fun and playful. Learn a layered technique that makes your design pop! Step-by- step instructions, color help and demonstrations with a variety of designs to choose from.

Intro to Oil Painting

If you’ve never picked up a brush, or you’ve never dabbled with oil paints and want to learn the basics, here’s the perfect place to start! Angela will guide and encourage you through the basics so you can create your own beautiful oil painting. Come on – you can do it! Angela can help!


Try It! Renegade Encaustics: Designs and Color in Wax
w/ Tracy Felix

Paintings in natural wax can have such intriguing subtlety. And it’s amazingly simple and fun to create
these effects! In this class, you will get to use various tools to create designs (or “mark-making”) in your wax painting, and then add color with oil colors and finish with highlights of sparkly mica powder.

Contemporary Painting: Abstract Painting with Color, Texture and Layers w/ Tracy Felix

Sat-Sun / March 10-11 / 11-5pm

To take full advantage of acrylic painting, learn about gels, pastes and mediums and what they can do for you! Over the course of two days, Tracy will take you step by step to create SIX paintings. She will demo each technique along the way, then allow you to play. This class is designed for beginners, or even more experienced artists, who want a great overview of the versatility of acrylic painting. Lots of great techniques to inspire and unleash your unique creativity.

The Basics & Beyond! Oil &  Acrylic Painting
w/ Angela Bandurka

This 5-week series will walk you through the elements of creating a series of paintings using oil or acrylic. Plenty of images will be provided for students to work on in their own time during class, so even if a student is fast at completing their painting, they will be able to start a new one while others work at their own pace. Students will gain experience in painting the following: simple still life, landscapes, florals, and tips for adding figures to your work. 


Painting Life with Life
w/ Bev Jozwiak

“Life” as in people and animals, and “life” as in energy and excitement. Learn to paint boldly with vivid color! Think outside the box, and paint outside those lines! Designed to help students at every skill level to master techniques, you’ll learn Bev’s tips and tricks, work on design, develop good composition, basic color mixing, and strong values.
