At Cole Art Studio, located in the heart of Edmonds WA, we encourage and inspire our students in their artistic process, no matter their level or preferred style.

We offer over 120 classes and workshops a year in our warm, inviting studio environment. Classes are in every medium from oils, acrylics and pastels to watercolors, encaustics and more. Cole Art Studio is regularly adding new  offerings, so be sure to check back with us often.

Babbling Brooks, Forest Streams & Rushing Water in Oil
w/ Mike Wise

Friday-Sunday / September 28-30 / 10:30-6:00pm (Sunday until 5pm)

A new workshop by this talented artist and instructor!  In this 3-day workshop, Mike will teach his students how to capture the dynamic beauty of movement in water. From quiet babbling brooks to rushing rivers and even waterfalls, students will learn Mike's techniques to paint rapids, rocky river bases set against shores filled with twigs and branches and the surrounding forests.  Perfect for those who have some basic experience in oil painting and want to continue to learn great landscape techniques.

Color Workshop for Watercolor Students

Calling all watercolor students! Join acclaimed artist Susan Waite and learn the secrets of creating colorful, bright watercolor paintings. You’ll learn how to mix colors to get the tones you want (without making mud) and you’ll get tools you can use in all your watercolor paintings. Then put all your newfound knowledge to work as you paint a simple, beautiful landscape painting. This experienced instructor and artist is well known in the PNW and we’re excited to bring her to Cole students!

Painting with Oils, Acrylics or Pastels
w/ Janis Grave

5- Tuesdays / Oct 2, 9, 16, 23 & 30 / 10:30-1:30

Learn more about painting in the medium of your choice – whether in Pastel, Oil or Acrylic. In this 5-week course, Janis will share from her wealth of knowledge in all 3 mediums, covering a range of topics such as composition, design, surface preparation, color choice and mixing. You can bring in your own work and references, and Janis will help you take your skills to the next level. This is a great class!

Cloud Painting Workshop in Acrylic or Oil

In this 2-day workshop you will learn to paint dramatic clouds from the master!  Andy will show you how to capture different types of clouds and effects, taking you through the stages of creating his fabulous signature cloud paintings. You’ll practice and learn various techniques Andy has developed to achieve his wonderful effects.

Fall in love with drawing - THE basis for all your future art endeavors. Even if you think you can’t draw a stick figure, instructor and artist Joe Mac Kechnie will teach you how! You will develop basic drawing skills using an approach that combines left and right brain abilities. The “twist” is that he’ll be guiding you in expressive and abstractive techniques, to take your drawing level to a fun, creative, exciting place where you learn to express your own voice!

Whimsical Realism in Oils

Pastel Techniques: Light, Reflections and Composition

Dive deeper into pastels with this award-winning artist and instructor! Packed full of good design and composition tips, you’ll learn Amanda’s techniques for creating water reflections and how to capture light in this vibrant medium.  This workshop will be a great mix of theory, technique and experimentation. Amanda will also show you how to use different techniques on different surfaces to achieve great results. Some experience in pastels is necessary.

Renegade Encaustics with a Kiss of Resin
w/ Tracy Felix

Experience two new sensations: the feel of hot melted encaustic wax; the fun of pouring some clear resin over top to create amazing shine. ARTspot owner, Tracy Felix has cooked up a totally unique class you won’t find anywhere else! You’ll get to use a smorgasbord of art supplies, learning how to build up layers of colorful wax and textures, and finish with a resin pour to make it lustrous and shiny. “Try It!” is a FUN way to try something new! Just 2 ½-hours on a Friday night, and no supply list: come with a friend or make it a date night – or come by yourself and make some new friends! Great for beginners! This Try It! is all about learning how to create a wonderful painting with Encaustic (hot, melted beeswax) and collage. Tracy will bring everything for you to use for collage. Your finished piece will have wax layered over collage, and collage layered over the wax - a work of art you'll be proud of! 

Secrets to Expressive, Loose Painting in Mixed Media

Crazily Creative Portraits in Mixed Media

Get ready for some fun portrait painting and drawing! With this award-winning portrait artist and instructor, you’ll break out of the mold and learn to spice up your portraiture with your own expression and creativity, using watercolor, acrylics, pastels, charcoals and inks!  After a quick review of how to get the features in the right places, you’ll learn ways to paint out-of-the-box, edgy, funny, emotional, and surreal faces.  This course is open to all who have some experience in portraiture.

The Joy of Drawing: Part 1
w/ Julia Carpenter

4 Mondays / January 28, February 4, 11, (skip 18), and 25 / 10:30-1:30

A new take on Drawing Basics! Julia will take you on an adventure of discovery – learning how to really “see”, exercising a different part of your brain than you usually use, and teaching you the magical joy of drawing! You’ll learn the basic elements like line, shape, value and form. You’ll learn about simplifying shapes, gauging proportions and how to create depth. This is a great place for beginners to start, and for a refresher course for all artists.

Textural Landscape Painting in Oil from Start to Finish

Learn how to achieve the dramatic effects you’ve seen in Mike’s paintings as we celebrate texture and dimension! In this 3-day workshop, you will learn to use mediums, tools and techniques for creating textural oil painting. Students will execute a landscape painting, learning how to start and how to finish, learning tips and tricks along the way. Some experience in oils is necessary.

Bird Portraits on Copper in Pastel

You’ve asked for it – here it is! Talented pastel artist Amanda Houston is known up and down the coast for her amazing bird portraits on copper. And in this great 2-day workshop, you’ll learn all her tips and tricks for “painting” on copper, plus how to create those wonderful birds! Painting Life with Life

“Life” as in people and animals, and “life” as in energy and excitement. Learn to paint boldly with vivid color! Think outside the box, and paint outside those lines!
